my '74's 4bbl motorcraft is a p.o.s. i have decided to swap in a holley 600cfm single feed...i need to know about any problems this may cause. the motor is a 401 bored 30 over and i have headers and a complete accel ignition system. is this carb the best buy for the money 190.00 including spacers and gasket? is there any other options? thank you

There are always other options. I run a 600 cfm single feed on my 360 and it runs great for a wore out old beater motor, much better than it should for a motor that was given up for dead and left under a bunch of pine trees for several years (it was still in the truck). If you off road be sure to get the side hung floats as the seem to work better than the center hung floats. I would also purchase a book on how to tune Holley's and a vacuum gauge. I usually buy my Holley's at a swap meet as I can get them for $25-$50 bucks and purchase a Holley trick kit so I can tune my carb for my likeing. If yopu buy a used one, make sure its is all there and the throttle shafts are not sloppy in the throttle base plate. This goes for any carb. Also try to find one with the electric choke.
Other choices include the QuadraJet, and Edelbrock Performer (Carter AFB). The 600 also worked well on a AMC401 powered Farmall Fastback.

I dropped a 600cfm holley with the vacuum secondaries on my 79 waggy and once i dailed it in it just rocked http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif.
I didn't get to try it off road though. I sold the Waggy soon after i installed it.

eBAY has lots of them. just dont paymore than 60 bucks for them. look for ones for fords as the linkages are simular.
I found mine at the pick a part. mine was off a ford van with a 460. only paid 35bucks
oh yea it bolted right up with a four hole plastic spacer.

No spares at the moment, but my bro says he has a real good one for me, he supposedly has it "all fixed up". I find this real scarry as the last one he had "all fixed up" didn't have any "c" clips holding the floats in place. It worked great until we hit the first bump, then it flooded over as the floats moved out from under the needle valves. Oh well his mistakes mean I get lots of free junk. If he comes up with it I'll let you know.
I would check your local big city want ads for a swap meet in your area and like RudyC says don't pay more than $60 bucks for a complete used one. If you get one and need help setting it up let me know and I will double check my junk and let you know the exact specs I'm running and what I would change. (for instance my current secondary is a hair light for the condition of the motor)
