View Full Version : T14a 3 speed
My 1973 J-2000 thriftside has a 3 speed on the floor. The book tells me it is a T14a. What can you guys tell me about the T14a??

I myself do not know much about them, but there is this (http://www.jeeptech.com/trans/t14.html)
I think there's a typo on that site. Second gear should be 1.61:1

Technical details compiled from ORC Tech pages and FSJ FAQ pages -
The T-14 is a 3 speed transmission with a cast iron case and a 1 1/8" 10 spline input shaft. Used only behind V6 and I6 was not used behind V8. Casting number T14A or 1302. The I6 T-14 has a 1 3/8" 6 spline output while the V6 T-14 has a 1 3/16" 10 spline output. Input shafts lengths also vary between the two applications.
The T-14 was used in CJs from 1967 to 1975 and in FSJs from 1967 to 1969.

:D
I've asked around similar question... I was more interested because I was offered one connected to a D20.
IMHO kinda sums up - decent but not great. poor gearing. newest are 28 yrs old so going to find some wear.
Pasted below are some of the replies...
:D
It's an OK tranny, no redeeming features though. A friend had one behind his 225 V-6 for awhile and it never broke, but he hated the lack of a low range. I'd say the value on them is not too high.
:D
I have the 3sp T-14A in my '71 CJ5 behind a 225 V6 and it's been fine. I rebuilt it a couple of years ago & it shifts great. It does shift more like a truck transmission than a car tranny - i.e. you can't shift fast & hard or you'll hurt something. It was available through '73 I think behind the 225 V6 & 258 I6. As for value, it's not worth much really, unless you already have one that needs parts. It's not a common swap into anything.
:D
Save your parts for a better swap. Seen WAYYYYY too many of them broken. Usually the main drive gear and
cluster go away. Yes, I know, there are tons of people that have never had a problem with them. But I rebuild an
average of 2-3 Jeep style tranny's a week and most T-14's that I see are worn out to a point of hard parts need
replacing (gears, shafts, etc.) or are broken. They were used primarily for a couple of years behind V-6's and
the inline 6's and the input shaft was different from one to the other so be aware of that. Basically, don't throw good money
after bad unless you know someone that needs one for parts or to replace a broken one.
But your truck is 1973... so according to sources I found the transmission should be a T-15, which is stronger ...mostly a bulletproof kinda thing - but again this is a 25+ year old transmission
Technical from ORC Tech pages and FSJ FAQ pages -
The T-15 is a 3 speed transmission with a cast iron case and a 1 1/8" 10 spline input shaft. Used in Jeeps behind V8. I has a casting number of T15 or 1307. The T-15 has a 1 3/8" 6 spline output shaft. It has a reputation as the strongest of the 3 speeds.
Found conflict on usage  -
