My current jeep still needs a ton of work but my friend is selling his J truck and I am thinking about buying. Heres what the J truck is:
1978 J10
D44 front
D44 rear out of a chevy I THINK
2bbl 360 (out of a waggy the PO told him)
Unknown T-case PROBABLY quadratrack because it appears to be full time 4wd but also has manual hubs and the PO TOLD use it was something from a chevy that was in there.
th400 tranny.
The bad:
TONS of rust
Unknown t-case possibly with issues
Project status... NOT drivable... Many things taken apart
New frame section (see "the good") may be welded in 1/8in off square... This would be a time consuming thing to change considering how well it is tied in with the old frame.
Rear springs need replacing
No front or back locker yet.
The good:
This guy is a good friend and of the highest integridy... I know exactly what I am getting because not only is he a perfectionist but I also helped with much of it.
Engine seems really healthy... I breaks loose 31s on dry pavement without any problems
Frame rot had claimed the back and he wanted it shorter so he built a new section of frame and cut off the back... The new section doubles as a bumper and WILL NOT COME APART. At all. EVER. He was exceptionally careful about welding and reenfocing EVERY part of the new piece and it also looks very clean.
Front axle machined for full high-steer with arms, TREs, etc.
So my hope would be to build a smaller more nimble FSJ for the heck of it... Keep the stock axles, lock it up, maybe add a 205 since it is pass side drop in front and run some 33s (which I think would be more than enough to make such a small, short wheelbase rig aweosome on the trails)... He is selling it because he is buying a house that needs work and has not more time or money to put into it but if I bought it he would get to drive it most of the time he was out wheeling with me anyway since I can only drive one rig at a time.
So... Buy ANOTHER time/money pit that will be awesome fun when it finally gets done?
How much to offer for it?
