okay so my 77j10 has a 360 that was build fairly stout about 10 years ago but now its getting tired to say tje least. the jeep seems to leak a bit of oil and build oil pressure in the oil pan. i have a few choices here and wana know what you guys suggest and think i should do.
i just bought a 75 j20 that has a 304(i know not original) that seems to be pretty tight and doesnt leak any oil.
a few months ago i picked up a 401 from a 77 javalin for 100.00 this motor hasnt ran in who knows how long. im sure it needs a full rebuild but i couldnt pass it up for 100 bucks cuz it has the 2.02 heads and factory 4 barrel carb.
now i wana get the 401 rebuild using the stock rotating assembly and heads what will it cost figuratively to have the block and heads done?

also will the 304 have the powe to pull my j10 around it has soa and 36" tsls with 373 gears...

if anyone has done a 401 build like this i would love a good link of a site for parts and such

I just had a 401 rebuilt with cast pistons and a CompCams XE256H. Parts, Labor and Machine work came to $3100. That was for a fully balanced and blue printed motor.

Use the 401 if you can afford it. Nothing wrong with using the 304 if that's the best running engine that you have. The 304 is basically a 360 with a smaller bore and different heads with smaller valves. Realize that each of these engines have their own flywheels or flexplates, so be sure to use the one that matches the engine.

You can buy a repop 401 flywheel from Omix-Ada ... the Jeep specialist resellers can get it. Bull Tear has them too, though I expect they are not Omix-Ada (import). It may be possible to have a 304 or 360 flywheel rebalanced for the 401. See this thread - http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/showthread.php?t=118619
