Follow the wire from the dash switch, I think there is a plug on that side of the firewall. The guy I bought the lights from also sent me a spare harness that has the same style plugs as the lights. I think it is the one under the dash, not sure.

ok i still didnt get it to work...i see that plug from the fenderwell, i follow it to the firewall on the back of the fuse block but then where does it go inside? is there a connector hanging down? or does it go in the main harness to the headlight switch?

Not sure John as I have not taken mine apart. I just got the new lights and they were factory original. I didnt have to rewire, maybe one of the other guru's can help.

Its ok, see what I did was I took the harness that plugs into the plug under the washer bottle (red w/ white stripe)... all I am trying to find out is how do I give that wire power?

John,
You've got me a little confused about what you are trying to do. I understand you just bought a set of factory fog lamps. I'm guessing you have the bumper brackets, and the wireing harness from the lamps to the firewall.

The ground for that harness is under the washer fluid tank.

Under the dash, the factory set up goes to a relay that is triggered by a switch that hangs from the dashboard. If I recall, the switch gets power from the low beam, the relay turns on the juice that comes directly from a fuse.

I can look at my wag and the manual if you need. Just not sure what you are trying to do.

If your wag doesn't have the switch and the relay. You might as well just run a direct (12 gage) wire to a heavy duty switch. That way you can run the fogs wether or not the high, low, or no beams are on. Only disadvantage is the headlight warning beep won't come on if you leave them on and turn the motor off.

The relay is used to take the load off the main headlight circuit. If you don't use the headlight circuit, then you don't need it. ANother use of relays is to let you use little wires and low current for most of the distance, and have the relay hook into some big wires (10 or 12 ga)right off the battery or alternator (with a fuse, of course).

While we are on the fog lights subject...

I had a 76 waggie for parts a few years back, and noticed it had fog lights behind the grille, just inside the headlights. They had mounting brackets and what looked like stock wiring equipment. I still have them in a box somewhere, and I was just wondering if anyone knew if they were stock or some type of aftermarket accessory.

Thanks
Brad

I have the wiring diagram for my year (85).
I'm still a little confused as to what you have, and I guess you are too!

Do you have the harness from the lamps?
Two plugs (one per lamp), one ring on the jioned black wires (ground), one single wire connector with the jioned red & white wire (power).

The red and white (14 gage) goes all the way to the massive connector behind the fuse panel (so says the diagram) it goes into a corner (bottom right ?) cavity, and comes out on the other side as an orange 14 gage wire.

The orange goes to a fog lamp relay. Mine hangs free.

The relay connector has 4 wires. A 16 gage white (cheap b@#tards) which is power.
Dark Blue 14 gage (signal from the fog lamp switch), 14 gage red w/ white that grounds ( also to the fog lamp switch.)

The 16 gage white goes to the head lamp switch where it is spliced to the connector with a white wire coming from the Park/tail light fuse. That is, the head light switch is irrelevent here, the line is always hot.

The fog lamp switch has 3 wires. The red w/ white ground, the dark blue power out, and a gray w/ trace power in. The gray w/ trace is connected to a gray that slices into the gray line off of the low beam switch.

Thats all. smile.gif

The dash bulbs and holders you can buy, they are very standard. I used to pull spares out at the junk yard when ever they were easily accessible. Virtually any make and model would do.

Now I just have to figure out my tail gate defrost wires... :(

Thanks John,
I think I got it now. Looks like I need to solder new wires to the rear window. Originals are gone. Only mystery left is why there is another terminal sticking out of the timer box below the main connector.

Let me know if you need more or better description of the factory fog set up.

Matt

Dumb but I have to be the one to ask. Are the bulbs ok and is the low beam selected? Will not have power if on high beam.
