What would it cost and take to put together a 3/4ton-1ton J-truck, with an AMC-390 NV4500 combo power train ? . . .
Preferably the dually . . . but would compromise on the SRW'D J/20 . . .
I know i'm losing my job in a month or less here but, i'm thinking i may need a work truck i can build, maintain trust and fix . . .
Kicking around the idea of some self employment for a while and i'd need a strong stout truck . . .

Good question. Not sure on the cost. I would think that if you are looking to be self-employed it would be good idea to have a truck(obviously a FSJ) that is attractive to customer. Now, I don't know the condition of your truck. I have not seen pictures of it. If I was in that position, I would worry about having a nice truck first, and then worry about upgrades when money comes in.
Just my 2 cent.

I have a broken 95' GMC K2500 with 6.5-T not fixing it again, and a 88' AMC-Jeep Comanche AMC-2.5L I-4 great truck but i wanna tow heavier then the 2.5er wants to go . . .
Towing the 6.5er doesn't like towing period . . .
I have a Love for AMC's and i happen to have a 390 or 2,3,5 10
Right now project J-5500 5.9-CTD just isn't budget able ;)

If your truck is driver's side drop it would be easier. I had to modify the 4500 tailhousing to go passenger side drop on a GM 205. At the front, if you '95 truck has the second series 4500 with the taller bell bolt pattern you can swap to a long Dodge gas input/bearing retainer and pick up a T176 bellhousing and then an adapter from AA for less than $300.
Towards the end of this thread I have pics of how I did the same with a Buick 455 in my '65 dually project: http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/showthread.php?t=83955

I built the 'one-ton' J truck I had for around $2500. I started with a 360/T-18/D20 so there was no need to swap drivetrain components other than the axles. Adding a New Venture would raise the costs considerably, but I'd bet you could build a decent rig for $3-4K.
How many 390s do you have!?
There was one at a local Jeep junkyard that closed a few years ago. It was laying on the ground so I covered it with a piece of plywood to sort of 'hide' it. Well that backfired and made somebody notice it. When I went back it had been paid for. The owner thought it was a 360 and said he'd take a $100 for it until the person that found it aksed "how much for that 390 under the plywood". A deal was made then and there and I missed my chance to add it to my pile of junk. :banghead:

This 95' K2500 6.5-T is no good for the build its a 4L80E 4spd auto trans, I basically would be starting with nothing and building up from there . . .
I got a call about a job today, interview at 5pm tonight
Anywho back on track,
First i have to find a J3000, then i have to find an NV4500, then rebuild the 390 then mate the 2 up . . .
drop the front drive shaft for now worry about the 4WD closer to the snowy season . . .

Good luck with the interview!
If you don't already have the 4500 then you can certainly consider possibly using a cheaper 2wd version and the divorced 205 of your choice.

Do it! A new angle is always great and you'll likely have it done 10 years before my '66 runs.
