Today I was looking through my Haynes repair manual and seen they have listed the T5 transmission in the Grand Wagoneer/J-Series Truck book. From what I have read the T5 was only used in CJ's from 82-86 or something like that. I also read that the T5 was only ever paired up with the I6 and the T4 paired up with a 4 cyl.
My questions are after reading some online sources, would it be strong enough to handle the 360? Has anyone on here thought about or tried this idea? The T5 is appealing simply because it is a 5 speed that has overdrive.
Thanks,
Matt

It came in some early 80's Wagoneers with the six. It was barely strong enough for the six, so no I wouldn't run it behind a 360. Do a search It's been talked about quite a few times.

The choice for the 360 is to use the NV3550 from a 4.0 engine.
The search will give the specific parts needed.

Pretty sure the T-5 was a Cherokee/J-10 truck with 258 I6 and only 1982 and 1983. (Not a good choice in a working or V8 rig)
AX15 or 3550 would be a better choice, but still not for hard/heavy use,
for that step up to a NV4500

As mentioned above only offered behind the I-6 in FSj's in 82/83. Dencent trans for what it was intended for light duty(had one in a DD Cherokee and a CJ8) but it's too lightly built to run behind a V8.

If your heart is set on a T-5, look for a T-5 World Class. I'm not positive, but I believe they have the same bolt pattern.

Personally I wouldn't even look at the t-5 behind a v8. I broke 2 input shafts in my cj with just the 4.2 pushing it and medium trail riding.. Thet do make hardened shafts and gears for it though.............

With enough $'s you can get a Jeep WC T-5 built, and it is much better than a regular T-5 but it is still a T-5 and the $'s needed is more than other better options.

The T5 WC is used in my Mustang. I don't think V8 is an issue so much as the vehicle weight. Mustang convertable weight is 3250 gross. The V6 in my Mustang produces more HP than a GW and approx same torque and I have been known to light the tires. I am fairly certain they used them in the GT's as well.
Edit: Tire size is part of the equation too. Mustang has low profile 15" tires.
