View Full Version : where/how to mount amplifier

only place I've been able to come up with to put stereo amplifier is in the rear wheel well, but this has been a problem because of difficulty securing it anywhere (gets thrown around) and moisture which inevitably accumulates, at least down here in Mississippi (shorts amp out and can get the speakers, too). been through two amps already. ideas/suggestions? even if only for securing it in place.

thanks. jwr3@netdoor.com

I took a piece of 3/4 plywood, cut it out to fit the snap in cover over the rear wheel well on the passenger side. I made it an inch or so too tall. I used a couple of small pieces for backing so that I could screw through the snap-in piece from plywood to plywood, that made it pretty ridgid. Then, I drilled a couple of pilot holes and used self-tapping screws to put the plywood directly into the metal above the wheel well (the snaps won't hold much weight). This gave me a solid place to mount my 100W VHF amplifier and speaker module (30lbs together). The bad part is, this is where your factory jack and wrench are stored, doesn't make for convenient access. but, if you have a High-Lift located elsewhere, than it's OK to do this. Moisture wise it keeps the stuff out of the wheel well and in from the elements, bad news is, stuff that is rolling around in the cargo area can damage it. It's also visible from the outside unless you cover it or have tinted windows. Hope that helps.

mount the thing under the drivers seat. pull the seat out and screw it to the floor, but remember to go under after and paint/undercoat/or RTV the threads sticking through the floor so water does not creep up the threads into the steel/carpet/amp...

Thanks, guys. About mounting under driver's seat, how did you fit it under the seat? I tried it, but with the motor etc... for the seat, I couldn't do it. Maybe there are some smaller amps out there that would fit, but I don't want to give up the watts.

In any event, seems like I'm gonna need some plywood. That'll be about the cheapest thing I've had to put in the Wagon.

Thanks again.null

I used the area on the passenger side access panel. Screwed 2 2x4's behind it and kinda wedged it in, it doesn't really move that much. This amp has been through hell and high humidity repeatedly so I'm not worried about the moisture... remember, its 90+ % humidity down here in Texas!

I mounted mine in way up under the dash, behind the CD deck...
there's a ton of room back there!..
They weren't huge amps, but they did fit nicely...
kind of tough getting at them for adjusting the gains, though... I put the crossover under the drivers seat...

I had the same problem. I took the GW to 4 or 5 stereo shops to get different opinions. I think my idea was the best, and I'm sure it cost me the least.

I made a shelf with legs out of particle board and put it on the floor behind the rear seat. I covered it with some gray industrial carpet that I got at Home Depot.

I have room for 2 amps under the shelf and a place for my future CD changer, and next week I'm putting a sub on top of the shelf.

Tell my if you want pics. I think it came out beautifully.

How big is this amp?? Why not mount it under the center armrest?? I mounted my cell phone(old bag phone style) under the center armrest and have just the handset protruding for access and it fit great and works fine. Been there for years. Just a thought :D

I mounted mine behind the dash in front of the passenger seat....made a little shelf, some straps and voila perfect!
