Guys, I am going to change to PS on my '72CJ5. Based on searched I am to understand that
'79-80 J20 or Gwaggy PS box, etc is what I need. I have a 360 in the CJ so brakets and all
should be the same as some of your rigs.

Could someone with those models/years get me some measurements...please?

I just want to be sure the bolt hole patterns will be the same as my exisiting manual box. I have
a saginaw box with three mounting holes. Two on the bottom and one foward on the top.
I would like the measurements center to center for the bottom holes and I guess from bottom forward
hole to top forward hole. I'm not sure they are in line with each other though. And, then maybe the general
measurements of the box itself. Heck, a picture of your brakets and set-up would be really nice :D but I don't want to
press my luck.

BTW, do any of you guys have a junk rig that may have brakets, etc you want to sell?

Thanks for any help you have to offer.

Nelson

:D

Hey, I'm planning the same thing to my CJ7. Got a box and pump off an old truck of mine, brackets off someone on the board. I'm thinking the steering shaft may need to be swapped out too. What are you doing about your manual shaft?
I can't help ya with the measurements though 'cause all my rigs are mid-80's. Sorry.

I am sure the box will bolt up. However I do think you will have problems with the drag link to pitman arm as I seem to remember the CJ having a smaller diameter joints. This may be able to be remedied by swapping the pitman arm, just not sure that is a possibility or not. I would have the power steering brackets and a good power steering box as well. I could get measurements and pictures as well. ;)

I can't remember the years off the top of my head but the high pressure hose connections are different between the late 70's and some time in the early 80's. If you already have PS hoses look for the ones that match.
You will need a CJ power steering shaft. The manual shaft will not fit the PS box. PS pump and brackets from any AMC V8 will work. The pump is a saginaw pump that you can also find on GM products.
Also as CJ mentioned...the rod ends on the FSJ's are bigger than the CJ's. So you would need a CJ PS pitman arm. I don't think the manual pitman will work here either.
If you get all that stuff it will bolt right up. This was the first mod I did to my CJ. Turning 33's with a manual box was no fun.

Crazy, I would like to have your brakets, at least, as long as they are exactly what I need. Figure a price w/shipping on them and email me when you get a chance. Shipping the box may be more problems than its worth. If you have a chance I would like to get measurements of the bolt holes on the pump and the year you have. If it will fit I then just have to search for that year parts.

As far as the pitman arm goes....What I am hearing is the pitman arm is different for power and manual. Is it a spline difference? I may have to find a CJ power pitman arm because I heard the FSJ pitman is longer and causes the short CJ to be a little "squirley" in steering. Since I don't need a dropped arm I my be able to find one fairly easy from some of my CJ buddies who installed droped arms.

I can order the pump/res, hoses and box from the local parts house for around $250.00. That probably wouldn't include the pulley...I forgot about that....you have that part too crazyjeepman?

I have a Flaming River colum and shaft so i am assuming I would only have to get a different coupler/ujoint to fit the box.

Chism, thats the problem prompting this I have. The 33" with lockers is impossible to turn and makes any rock crawls impossible to change lines in mid stream. I have already replaced my manual box twice!

hey, thanks for the replys
