I recently purchased the Davis Unified Ignition, and had a couple of questions / concerns. If any of you have installed this ignition, please post or email me. Thanks.

I meant the clip that holds the base of the DUI to the timing cover.....

ahh... I think mine is fine... But mine is like 2 years old..
Mine worked just fine. If yours was incorrect, give them a call. Their customer service is pretty good. They totally blew my order and sent me the wrong style DUI (I asked for a 7-pin, they sent me a standard 4-pin). The sucked up all the costs of shipping and didn't charge any extra for the 7-pin conversion, which normally adds another $100. Good company and I still highly recommend them.

Just pulled my DUI from Performance Distributors after about 4k miles. It has worn down the housing about 1/4" at the gear and now the shaft moves up and down by that much. Didn't find any shimming problems when it was installed so I don't yet know what caused this. Have inspected oil pump, cam gear, timing cover and distributor and haven't found the cause yet. Engine is apart right now for new pistons, heads and efi conversion. Will be fixing distributor and triple checking it's fit and shimming when it goes back in.

I've had the D.U.I inplace for about two years now and love it.
And yes, the hold down clamp they sent was incorrect, but I just used my old one. Worked fine......phil

My old hold down clip wouldn't fit around the dizzy shaft. I called them a while back, and they said if it didn't fit, make a drawing showing where it needed to be adjusted, and send the clip & drawing back to them....then they would fix it, and resend it to me. Not a big deal, but enough to be a hinderance. I hope to get time to measure/draw this weekend, and send it off monday.

Wesdog, what happened to the hard steel wear washer that the gear is
suppost to ride on ? Was your gear riding directly on the housing ?

Mike D.There is a thin steel spring washer between the gear and the housing. I think there may be a part missing such as the one you mentioned. I need to take a look at the Performance Distributor catalog or website and see what they show. I will be calling them about this problem in the near future.

For a heavy duty distributor hold-down clamp check out the Performance American Style website:
http://www.performanceamstyle.com/Cart/description.php?II=8&PHPSESSID=0881a2dcab4c60410f0a715eec178f53&PHPSESSID=0881a2dcab4c60410f0a715eec178f53
I have one of these and it fits very nicely with my DUI distributor. The one from Performance Distributors was weak and too short. Make sure you use a bolt or stud that is long enough to engage all the threads in the timing cover boss. It is very easy to break the timing cover threaded boss if the bolt is short and you try to torque it a bit too much. Been there, done that. I recommend using a stud and nut. You can get that from Performance American Style also if you want or just go to a hardware dealer. Make sure the stud is long enough to bottom out in the threaded timing cover hole and still have enough length for clamp, washer and nut.

Well, the clip i have had several problems:
1. the side of the clip that fits between the dizzy shaft and the back of the timing cover was too large, so I had to grind it down (over 1/8" of material had to be shaved off)
2. the interior u-shaped section of the clip was too large from side to side. the gap between the outside edges of the dizzy shaft and the interior edges (from "leg" to "leg") of the clip measured .188" (using a thickness gauge).
3. The center of the u-shaped section of the clip was too large from the center to the dizzy shaft. The gap is .62" (using a thickness gauge).
4. When fully tightened down, the bottom of the clip "legs" do not come in contact with the upper portion of the dizzy lip on the shaft. The gap is .32" (using a thickness gauge) between the bottom of the "legs" and the top of the lip.
Now, I called and spoke with a gentleman a few weeks from Performance Distributors, and he stated that if I would make the measurements and send a drawing with the original clip, they would fix it and send a new one. Today, however, I spoke with another person who stated that the clip I recieved was the same one that everyone else got with their DUI, and that he wasn't aware of their company having a policy of recieving wrong items and correcting them. Getting a little ticked off, to say the least. Have any of ya'll had experiences like this with them?

Get yourself a little riled up and ask to talk to their customer service rep. They came through for me on my incorrect order (although now that I think about it I'm pretty sure I did end up using my old hold-down clip).
