View Full Version : Manual and Auto....

So I am pursuing this diesel swap and debating a manual or automatic tranny. Ultimately, mpg is the goal, and I know that manuals allow for better efficiency. But is it THAT significant.
My Wagoneer isn't used for rock crawling or offroading. It will be a DD and a cruiser when complete. (I know that may be a sin to some of you, I am sorry :p )
I have been driving my little beater ford escort 5 speed around and the other day decided to drive the wag to school. Forgot how much I loved driving it.
But after driving the escort, it made me unsure of how the manual would feel in the wagoneer.
.01 for your thoughts

I would go auto, in order to keep things as relativly simple as possible. Are you going the 6.2 route? If so i'd look into an overdrive tranny, 700r4 or 4l80 or whatnot. I also just can't see a manual trans adding much in the way of mpg, other than the o.d. if you were to go with a 5 speed.
My 2 cents, anyway.
Edit: I think these things make great cruisers. It is your truck so build it and use it as you see fit. What IS important is that you enjoy whatever it is you do with it.

IMHO changing gear is the motoring worlds most overrated experience, so no choice
do u ever hit traffic? lights? etc? If u do its a no contest, auto every day

I don't think you would see a big enough difference in milage to affect your decision. I would go with your preference for whatever you are the most comfortable with. I have had at least two of my vehicles as stick for the last 10 years. On heavy traffic days, I really hate part of my 43 mi trek home from work unless I am driving my truck or the Waggie. On the other hand, sometimes it fun when the traffic opens up and I am in the Mustang. ;)
