Just got a new to us 78 wagoneer. I'm going to try and get some pics and I'll go into more detail in the readers ride section soon. This thing is in really good shape and someone took real good care of it for a long time followed by someone not taking great care of it but still not to bad. This thing hardly has any rust at all. And I mean hardly any. What little there is is surface rust and we can still work with it. I need a few things for it right now so that I can make it manageable for day to day driving. This is going to be a daily driver and not a rock crawler or a serious off road vehicle. I'll go more into it soon in the rides section if you guys are interested, if not, not a big deal.

Things I need soon......

1. Drivers seat. Both fronts are there and need to be recovered, but the drivers frame is broke. I personally don't like to drive leaning up against the back seat with my right shoulder, but, if you do and you have one that sits up right......let me know. I'm sure we could work out a trade. :)

2. Side view mirrors. It has a little tiny one on the drivers side that obviously has a custom feature for off roading because everytime you hit a bump it points straight down so you can see what you just hit. Again, if you need this kind of thing, let me know. I don't.

3. Rear seat belts. I want an original set. I'm going to put one 3 point in it because my girl friend has a kid and a car seat. I do want an original set to put in it because for some reason these Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogley kids just keep getting bigger and bigger and won't stay small and easy to handle. If you've figured out a way to stop them from getting bigger and fairly cheap, again, let me know. I might pay big money for this little tid bit of info.

4. Tires. Need some good idea's for tires. The ones on it are mainly for off road and little road use. I need it the other way around. I'm going to hang onto these and the rims so I can have the extra set just in case I decide to have fun with it. But, this will be an everyday driver so I need something more manageable. Also, what's the original size. The speedo is off so I'm assuming it has some taller ones on it.

Overall, this thing is in really good shape. I think it was probably an older guy who owned it and his kid or grand kid got it. I got it from a dealer who got it at a foreclosure auction. Again, I'll go more into it in the RR section if you guys are interested. I appreciate all the help and info ahead of time. I've always been into AMC's and drag racing (I have a 69 AMX and 70 Machine) so when the GF started looking at Cherokee's I was ok with it. Then I saw this SJ and had to show it to her. Next thing you know, we are on the road to go get it.

Anyway, let me know if you have any or all of these things and if you can help me out and if you're interested in seeing this thing and hearing me tell you about it and how it came about to be in the driveway.

Thanks guys and probably gals,
Tslave

Sorry guys, I thought I put this in the general thread and obviously the Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogley new guy screwed up. And apparently I'm not smart enough to figure out how to move it there. At least I figured out how to edit it and realize my mistake. That must be good for something huh? Probably not huh?.......figures......

All hail the Noob!!

There seems to be a problem with the weldment on the drivers seat. I have that problem with my original seat as well.
I never needed a 3 point harness to secure my safety seats, so I cannot figure out what all the fuss is about, unless they have changed the design of the seats. I always found the shoulder strap to get in the way. All of my seats were either rear facing, or had their own occupant strap so that the seat itself was secured by the seat belt. I can see the possibility that you may need one of those extender straps to lenghten it a bit.

Burner......I've thought about maybe taking the seat apart and seeing if I couldn't weld it back together. Not really sure how bad it is. The thing has seat covers on it now and I haven't really got a chance yet to start looking at it. Like I said I just got it home yesterday.

I know what you're saying about the kid seats. I really don't see a problem with just the lap belts. I'm still considering just putting them in. The problem is the GF is going to want the 3 point. Just another one of the stupid things that have been beat into people's heads that has to be done. My parents just used to have me "get down" when they saw a cop. Course now that I think about it.......that could explain a lot of things.......

Jaber......Believe me I already know. Like I said. I've got a 69 AMX and a 70 Rebel Machine. Thanks to my dad, I've been into AMC's in general for as long as I can remember. There was always at least 2 siting in the driveway. Course, I wouldn't have it any other way. It's now just a new toy to play with and now I have an AMC to tow my other one to the track with. :D We'll see how that goes over when the weather warms up.

I have not looked at the seat frame myself yet, but I am told that 9 times out of 10 yes, it can be rewelded, and possibly reinforced.

My mother used to throw her arm up to keep me from bouncing off the metal dash in our 64 malibu. ;)

Welcome from Southern Illinois.

You can do a search using "mirrors" in the title and it will have several examples of what people have done.

Some folks have put Ranger/bronco mirrors, mid 80's chevy pickup mirrors (my favorite), and even one guy that put TJ mirrors on his Cherokee.

I found that Summit Racing (or LMC Truck) sells an early 70's pickup mirror that's not too far off of the early wagoneer mirror.

I had the same seat problem on my '79 Wag. I partially removed the seat cover and re-welded it.

I think it is a common problem.

Cool. Thanks guys. I'll have to check the mirrors out and see what I can come up with. I just don't want to have to drill more holes if I don't have to but I would like to have some that are a little bigger. Guess I'm just going to have to figure out which is more important. The thing is, this thing is in really good shape and I don't want to do to much damage to it. It's one thing to take an older car that has already had the things done to it, another to start putting holes in and changing everything when it's all pretty much there. Just my own opinion.

Burner......I know exactly what you are saying. Same thing here. It was like a natural instinct for my mom to just throw her arm across when she had to hit the brakes hard. Dad on the other hand waited till after and said you should have had your seat belt on. Even though the seat belts were so far into the seat or next to the console you couldn't find them if you wanted to.

As far as pictures of the Machine you guys are going to have to wait. It's down at my dads garage with the motor sitting beside it. Had to pull it apart since we had a strange noise last time I drove it. Think it was getting ready to spin a bearing. But, the kid in his daddy's corvette didn't have a chance. :D

I can put up a couple of the AMX. I only have 3 or 4 though. I'm not a big picture guy so I don't just run around with a camera. I leave that to others to do. I'm just usually the one either in the car or holding the cooler full of my frosty ones, one or the other.
