Hello,
If I weld something on my Cherokee's frame, will the heat cause any damage to the frame, will it lose some temper...?
Thanks.

Depends on what you are welding with, what you are welding, and the frame....

Welding on Frames can be tricky, I do it all the time so it is no big deal for me... the ones you really have to watch out for is the one tons... they are the real tempered frames.... most 1/2 ton frames are not tempered. About half of the 3/4 ton frames are... I have yet to find a one ton Frame that is not tempered.

To keep what temper that come natural from the forming of the frame... weld it and make sure you get a full penetration of the weld. Let it cool a bit... about 2 minutes or so... then Hit it With a hose to fast cool it. this will let it Start the temper prosses with out distorting much, Fast cooling then locks it in... This is called Water tempered....(you can ice temper, oil temper, air temper or Water temper. take your pick) Water temper give a nice mild temper so that it does not get too hard and Brittle. Oil temper is mostly for HARD knifes and swords. (or water plundge cooling)

Well I think I put in more then my two cents here...

When heating to pull.... you are changing the shape of the frame.... not attaching something to the frame. If we Straighten out a frame (rare but once and a while) we heat it bend it and let it cool.... But when attaching something to a frame we Quick cool it.

To give Gem Added credit... lots of Opinions on how to properly weld to a frame, Pick the way you believe in and stick by your guns.

As to your Frame, if it is Tempered, not sure, But I would think not. Take a Monkey wrench, grab the lip of a frame and see if it bends. Getting a tempered frame to bend this way will make you not think about the wife for days. (and you will talk real Squeeky for about the same time.)

I have worked Frames on the whole line up of Econoline vans...E150..Easy money, E250 about the same...Mainly spring differences and Axle... but the E350... OH MY GOD... You can hit the frame with a Sledge hammer, you can get a huge wrench and huff and puff... you must heat the kronk out of the frame to bend it. (plus the E350 has Extra body Bushings)

heat as little of the width of the frame as you can so it will not sag or warp.
