I just repaced my motorola 37 amp alternator (internally regulated) with a rebuild from the auto parts (old one's bearings were going out), I watched them test it after I had problems and it tested good.

Problem; when I have the connection plugged in for the regulator, it confuses the spark/timing and the engine will hardly run, backfiring out the back and up the carb. My tester says it is charging when hooked up like this as it should be. When I unplug the regulator wire, the engine runs perfect, but I don't charge!

Same result when I disconned the wires from what appears to be a motorola regulator on the fender near the ignition module.

What is happening??

1975 never came with an internally regulated alternator from my experience. So was your old one an after market one, or is the new one wired up the same, different?
