Anybody know of a good place (besides in front of my radiator) to mount my fan mounted tranny cooler? I am hoping to get a little ram air, but don't want to run down the efficiency of my radiator... not to mention there isn't enough room in front of the rad for a fan and a cooler.
Thanks,
I-Kang

I don't think I've seen a tranny cooler put any place else but in front of the rad. Needs the air flow.

I found someplace else to mount trans coolers... I've got one on each side of the coolant radiator, right next to the headlights... It took a couple months to do, but it's possable!!! And they do have fans tucked in behind them as well... Mucho work. If you're currious you can see many pics at:
members.aol.com/fsj1978/index.html I think you can find the pics from there. <G>

What kind of airflow do you get having it mounted like that?

Chris,

Do you have any finished pics (with the grille)? Looks like a great idea, except I don't know how I'd put on my rhino when I'm done :D

Thanks,

Here is a link to a recent thread that talked about putting it in a couple places... unfortunately they don't get too descriptive. :(

OOPS! Rhino wouldn't do too good at covering up the 'mess' I don't think...
As for pics, try the "Exterior pictures" link, I do believe their's a front picture in there with the grill.
Airflow seems to be pretty deacent... Trans temp runs around 180 or so when cruising the fwy... 200-200 if it's *HOT* outside. When towing going uphill it will trypically run 240. Highest I've seen it is 250. These temps are taking at the transmission, on the outlet side that goes TO the trans coolers. That should be the hottest spot you can get tapped into.

OOPS! That's the 'old' website I linked to on AOL... We recently changed to Verizon, and that's where the exteriour pictures are... Here's the newer link:

My cooler is zip-tied to the grille. I put it there because I installed an electric fan in front of the AC condenser(makes 134 work better). Seems to work fine there.

Kukur: thanks for the thread....

Cliff: how much space do you have between your cooler and electric fan? And I also assume it is a pusher fan since it is infront of the radiator? Does your radiator lose efficiency since your cooler is in front of it?

Has anyone mounted their (fan driven) cooler on the bottom side of their engine comparment or somewhere near the t-case? What would be the pros and cons of doing something like this? Would I get more cool air to the cooler (assuming it is fan driven)?

thanks,
Kong

i just mounted my tranny cooler in front of the rad, i didnt want to but any other option wouldnt do. depending if you off-road it and what kind of off roading itll see mounting it under the truck could be bad. it could get clogged w/ mud, hit on a rock, or snagged on something. if dirt roads is all itll see then under would be ok, (as long as its got a fan)

Kong, I used a B&M SuperCooler and mounted it next to the drivers side headlight. I unbolted the front from the radiator core support and layed it flat, then used an electric jigsaw to carefully cut the opening to fit the cooler and cleaned up the opening with a file and grinder. I mounted the cooler from the rear with the 2 ports facing towards the radiator. I had to trim the mounting flanges on the cooler a little to clear the round curvature of the headlight area and also bent the cooler mounting flange so it would bolt flat to the body piece with some rubber washer to isolate vibration. I don't use an in-tank tranny cooler, only the B&M. I used Earls Performance 3/8" braided lines and fittings to plumb it in from the steel trans lines to the cooler. I will eventually have a thermostat inline to control tranny temp but still have to finish installing it. I drilled some additional holes behind the cooler in the radiator core support sheetmetal to allow hot air to flow through the cooler and on into the engine bay area. I may eventually mount a very small puller fan behind it but it's a very tight fit and I really haven't needed a fan yet. You can see some installation photos in my FSJworld Cooling photo album. I have a matching oil cooler on the passenger side. It looks pretty good with a Rhino grill installed but I put the Razor back on cause I don't like the hassle required to take the Rhino Off/On when I work on the front area.
The B&M cooler seems to be very rugged in construction and it would pretty much require a front collision to damage it. A stone guard could be mounted in front of it if desired. The cooler works well and I have used it in some very hot conditions towing uphill in the desert.

KONG - NO CHANGE IN ENGINE COOLING. RAN COOL BEFORE AND AFTER. THE TRANS COOLER IS ABOUT 2" IN FRONT OF THE FAN (YES, A PUSHER).

I INSTALLED A PUSHER FAN ON MY 89 WAG, AND REMOVED IT AFTER IT RAN HOTTER.
