Hi - I am considering an 83 Wagoneer Limited with a felt / foam padded roof. The material is completed dry cracked. My question is whether the metal roof underneath is the stock roof (like non-felted roofs) which could easily be prepped and re-painted or is raw sheet metal that would need to be re-covered. I'm hoping I could strip off the junky material to metal and simply re-paint....???

Thanks

You'll probably find that it is very rusty under it with, extra rust at the edges along the drip rail. How does the headliner inside look?

The head liner is a complete mess. I didn't check underneath it as I should have. The material at the top of the windshield is detached, almost shrunk back, and showing some rust. In fact there must be a leak somewhere because the front carpet is wet. Back carpet is damp. Might it be rusted through the roof in places? Ugh. How big of a pain is that? Fixable?

The body is completely rust free with 89K original miles. It was a Texas, Arizona and then South Dakota Jeep. Its been sitting for a year. Two floor pans are rusted through - but likely due to years of soggy carpets.

Maybe some of you guys know this Jeep. It was sold on Ebay about a year ago from South Dakota. It is Sand Color with tan interior and with near total delamination of the wood. Sold for less than $1K. ???

As rusty as the floor sounds you will find far more after you pull the carpet up in back. It sounds like it is rusting from the inside out. I would run away if I were you.

I'm going back this weekend to further inspect the roof and floors. I will pull back some of the vinyl and carpeting to get a good handle on the extent of rust. Two questions though:

1. If the roof is OK, can I simply strip the vinyl etc. to metal and expect the standard metal roof underneath? One that I can prep / paint and be good with? Or are there other steps or considerations to take into account?

2. There is rust at the top of the windshield. Is that an instant "walk-away" item or easily overcome?

Like I said, the body and frame are rust-free so I want to try and make this work. Plus, only 89K original miles.

Thanks a lot.

If above the windshield is rusted out you will probably find the roof edges around the sides in similar shape. Under the rag top will look just like any other GW roof but most likely rusted pretty good. If the rest of it is in good shape and you know somebody that can weld or if you can then it might be worth it, but if you have to pay somebody to do it then .........
