I have an '82 WT w/360. It has a driver drop Dana 44 front differential without any vacuum operated hardware. The transfer case is a NP228. Is this correct?

Thanks
Matt

Do you have manual hubs or dash 2x4 / 4x4 switch?
NP208 if you have manual hubs and either 228/229 (not sure) if it's a select-trac.

It has manual hubs. Will this setup work like it is? I haven't cranked it yet. The 360 had blown head gaskets and was torn down when I got it. I'm debating whether to use a running 258 I have just to get it going.

That's probably a 208 but the tcase sounds like the least of you troubles.
The 258 may not be much of a problem. I'm not 100% positive but I think that both the 727/208 combo were in both 6 and 8 cyl. The 258 sits back farther on the frame than the 360 but I think everything should line up (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Other than that you have different motor mounts and wiring and maybe different length driveshafts.

Does it have a 2WD mode? The only two tansfer cases avail in 82 were the part-time NP208 and the full-time NP219, neither are vacuum operated.
The manual hubs were standard w/208 but yours could have been added later.
The 208 has a shift pattern of 2H-4H-N-4L and the 219's is 4L-N-4L-LOCK(no 2WD mode).
If you have a manual tranny it's the 208, the 219 only came behind AT's but the 208 can be found behind both manuals and AT's.

I believe the 228 was ONLY offered in 1986. They didn't like it and went back to the 229 for '87 and up.

Oh, and 228s and 229s are vac-operated...
