View Full Version : Which FSJ?

I've seen many pics of Cherokees built for trail duty, a few less pics of J-Trucks (but the ones I have seen seem to be purpose built), and few pics of Gwags. I'm curious as to why?

I also saw a poster make the comment that Wagoneers are a dime a dozen....which got me wondering.....

I currently have a Grand Wagoneer that I'm thinking about building for expedition use (think Troubled Child), and my future wife has a well-built XJ (35's, 12" lift, long arms, locked front and rear, etc. etc. etc.). I keep flip-flopping between the Wag's comfort, the 'Kees style, and the J-Truck functionality. No, this is not another one of those "what should I build threads." It's more of why did you build what you did threads, and "what would you build if you could do it all over" threads :p

If I could start over......a '85-86 k30 donor, and my '78 chief.

Rob the d60+14 bolt, output shaft from the th400, and np205 with adapter from the chity. Sell or scrap the rest. Put it all under my Chief, with the 401 rebuilt @ 9.5:1 or so and then add ARB or an OX to the front, and weld the rear. While we are dreaming, a np203 doubler too:D.

I think that would pretty much cover the drive train. Then long springs, for flex, a winch, and many other nickle$ and dime$ BS (and maybe some arm$$$ and leg$$$ BS ).

I love the looks of a beefed up Chief, especially if its done Hammer style.:fsj: ( He is a member here or here is a link to a pic of what I am referring to http://www.froadin.com/index.html He does need to slap some paint on it though:p)

This should get a lotttttt of different responses. Everybody has their likes and dislikes.

I've had a J20 and a couple waggys. It really comes down to how much stuff you need to wheel with. I prefer a waggy because of the 4 doors. I have kids and dogs and it makes it MUCH easier to load them in and out. And if I am not taking the family I can just fold up seat and utilize all the space. The only functionality difference between the waggy and Jtruck/Chero is is the axle width. I think some people (the wife) feel a little less tippy on the trails with the wider axles. That's why I have a WT Waggy, I have everything I need in one FSJ ;)

its taken me 3 yrs to find my 2 door, and i had to settle on a N/T even tho W/T was the preferred option, in that time i passed by more than enuff waggys, the two FSJ's are a completely different look in my view, one looks like its ready to hit the trail, the other looks like its ready to load up the kids and dog (I have kids, and they are gonna be loaded up, i would just prefer that it doesnt look like im in the wifes mpv), as everyone says, purley personal.

that bein said, im slowly buildin a stable, and the plan has always been CJ7 (2 yrs build, all done bar a month or so), a 2 door (just started), and a J10 (only seen one in the UK for sale in last 4 yrs, and i was skint at the time :banghead: ). If i have the time and motivation then a CJ8 will be the final addition (hahaha, famous last words).

so i suppose what im tryin to say is I love them all if they are pre-electrickery, but maybe i dont love the waggy enough

I want one of each.

I have a J-10 trail rig (or at least soon it will be)

I want a waggy that will be mildly built for a DD.

I want a cherokee just because.

I want a J-20 just because.

I will be looking at what is supposed to be an '81 honcho next week...I know I can't buy it but I keep hoping something will happen:rolleyes: to where I can get it.

I also want an FC-150 and 170, willys wag, and a CJ-6.

But I'm not greedy.

Scott, we would have come up there and gave you a swift kick if you had not picked that 86 up. ;) 4 doors Rock.

Some people get it bad. We went all crazy in our minds and thought we needed a DD Waggy each, a wheelin Waggy each and a heavy duty truck each. We wheeled the snot out of the J20 in Moab right after we bought it. The difference between that and a Waggy is like night and day on the trail. To me, Waggy/Chero wheel base is easier to navigate on the rough stuff in the long haul. It is just an addiction, all mine and I'll take care of it in my own way.

I'm a big fan of the Wagoneers, standard or Grand. But I do like the '80-'83 WT Cherokees and would love to have one with a 258/T18/208 in it. That and an '80's J20 with the same combo.

Thanks for the responses so far.

I've been on here, lurking around mostly, for about a year. I have to agree that the Chero looks more rugged, but I think that's only because when I was originally introduced to 4X4 vehicles it was with the plethora of full-size Blazers in North Texas at the time. Now I wonder if there is any truth to the statement. Do the 2 extra doors really make the Wagoneer any more vulnerable?

Easy,

Do you want to be able to haul stuff? Then get a J-Truck.

Do you not want to be able to haul stuff? A Cheif or Waggy.

If it is the latter and just 2 people, a Cheif...if more people a Waggy.

If just 2 people and a Cheif I woulod prob loose the rear seat and
make a recessed storage something and make room to sleep...

Build to suit.

I choose a J Truck cause it is the truck I owned as a kid... "I" am NOT doing the current "trend" of building a rock crawler. I am building a 4x4
Jeep Truck and doing it in a manner so as to fix everything I ever
disliked about the J Trucks. Read my Under Construction link in my sig...

Waggy's are more common than their 2-door counterpart. I would go with Cherokee [just out of personal preference], if you can't get an M715 :D

I have a Cherokee, It will be a desert-toy; probably with some custom suspension parts; but he'll stay stock looking on the outside aside from that.

if its for hard trail use i would go n/t 2 door cherokee. i would cut up the fenders or put some m715 style flares in place. i would replace the axles anyway with d60 front, 14 bolt rear. and then wheel the hell out of it. and i wouldnt be sad because i wouldnt be wrecking any widetrack flares. but for a dd/ mild wheeler you really cant beat a w/t cherokee with a 4-6 inch lift.

ever driven one? most lifted vehicles feel tipsy even with full width axles. the fact that the cherokee body is about 6 inches narrower than the axles really makes it stable. when my w/t cherokee was stock height it could corner real easy, probably the best handling of any stock fullsize vehicle.

yes i understand the question asked, i just gave you my imput on a certain use, i dont know how hard of trail use your jeep is gonna see. if its more of a dd/mild wheeler my advise would be to find the one with the less rust, because any fsj is great for that type of use. if you have kids or plan to have more than another person in the jeep a lot, the wagoneer would be about perfect.

Id say W/T Cherokee. I loved my old Wagoneer but just wasnt diggin the 4 door grocery getter look anymore. And Im not a big fan of J-trucks (personaly if I wanted a pick-up Id buy a Chevy or Dodge). But anyway, my Chero is set up with a bench seat up front and the rear seat removed. Im 22 and in the Navy w/no kids so I use it kind of like a pick-up with a cap except that I dont have to exit the vehicle to access anything in the back. Plus if I need to I can sleep in the back and still listen to the radio :) And being a W/T its way stable on and off the road, even with no swaybar and 5in of lift w/33's. The only downfall of it is that I cant fit though some of the narrower trails that my Wag could...but thats why I made a beefy front bumper :bluelaugh: its an excellent wheeler as it sits now.:fsj:

I have a waggy and a Cherokee. I like the Waggy's but no where near as much as the Cherokees. J trucks are cool but not really my taste. I really like the M715's but very hard to come by and expensive to aquire.
But If I had my choice I'd go with the Cherokee WT every time. The Cherks are harder to come by than the wags cause they're just cooler IMHO. Don't get me wrong I dig the waggy's and they are every bit as capable as the others. M715's to me are cool because I'm a vet and they are just rugged and militaristic. Not to mention they look like a solid gun platform for mounting a good old M2. :D
But any FSJ you decide to go with will be alot of fun for you. These vehicles are fun to drive and they have a certain quality about them that gets you very addicted to having them around. (they breed like rabbits)hehehe.

I voted ANY FSJ since I love all 3 types.

My Chief for strutting/intimidating others around town and wheeling/camping in the Sierra, a Luxo late Grand Waggy for around town or road trips and a beefy looking short box Truck with a brow for towing the Chief long distance to events etc.

I don't want to own a car ever again so it's FSJs or the Virago.

I started out hell-bent on finding an old Chief to use for winter driving, camping and hunting. But the more I thought about it, the more appealing those extra doors on the Wag became so I ended up with a great old 72. Now I just have to get around to working on it.

I would love a Cherokee Chief and will likely find one down the line. I'd originally went out to look at a Wagoneer but the owner didn't show, so I wound up checking out the J10 which I purchased.

Knowing now, I'd also probably have spent more money up front and purchased something further along in the fixer-upper process. However, it has been fun putting it altogether (okay, not all the time). I'd just have preferred to be driving it around by now.

Ive had at least one of each, but I never got any of the cherokees I had on the road. If I could go back in time Id probably try to save my first Grand Wagoneer(even though the frame was gone......ish). I loved my j10, I wish I never sold it but it was one of those things that I needed the cash more than an extra car, but it turned out well, Im friends with the guy that bought it and his wife bought my old lifted up wagoneer. One thing I do plan on having in the future is another cherokee 80-83, I think of it as a combo of a j10 and a wagoneer, you have the best of both trucks, WT axles, 2 door, SUV, etc.

There is a flaw in your poll. You only offer the GRAND Wag option. I prefer the mid-late 70s Wagoneers. The only good wood is no wood. And I love my QT xcase. I prefer 4 doors since we haul dogs, and I like having my gear contained inside a vehicle. Like Flint mentioned, I wheeled my J20 in Moab one year and it's insanely different than driving my wag (longer, wider and different clearances so I had to relearn how to pick my lines on the fly). I am much more comfy on trail in my Wags, even my seemingly tippy SOA (it only looks tippy if you're driving behind her - or riding in the passenger seat! :p) It comes down to personal preference. Go with the model that you love and wheel the snot out of it!

Oh, it isn't about what I'm going to build. It's about what others would build if they could do it over.

I have the GWag, and I love the old girl. She's roomy and comfortable. And, I have access to my fiancée's overly built XJ to abuse. So, I'm pretty much set.

I just read, several times, that one style was preferred over the others, and I see pics of more J-Trucks and Chero's built than Wags, so I was curious about what people thought and why. :drivin:

From the looks of the poll results, people around here really don't favor the Wagons. I wonder if this is merely because of the WT option on the trucks and 2 doors? I have to agree that the narrow track has some advantages...at least for me.

I peronally think it's more for the stability and look of the WT. The stance does look pretty sweet IMHO. I dont think it necessarily for the 2 door. Actually I've hear many chero owners complain about accessing the back seat. I couldn't even imagine trying to get a large cooler into the back seat (straped down of course) for a trail run.

Ok, so this raises a question in my mind.
Aren't the spring perches in the exact same place on a WT as an NT on the frame?
I ask because I have never read any different here, and there would be no greater stability provided by the wider axles if the springs are not set wider. You would have some lower CG from the axle width, but the sway and pressures applied to the springs would be basically the same.

Chris P.
02-17-2010, 05:17 PM
Yeah, the spring perches are in the same place. Wider axles wouldn't help with body roll on cornering, but wouldn't they give a little more stability to prevent flipping the vehicle?

i'd want to build a w/t cherokee, so i can bring more people along, and have a place to sleep in the back. i love my g-waggy, and it's fun to wheel, but i get paranoid about messing it up. if i built any of them, for wheelin i'd build one that isn't in such great shape as the g-wag i have now. i wouldn't mind a j-truggy either:D
i personally like having something that i can load all my crap into, and just disappear for a week. i prefer not to trailer my stuff, because when it gets to that point, i'd just as soon build a buggy.

CutterN55
02-18-2010, 09:52 AM
I like my Grand Waggy, but I'd do the lift differently. I have a 6" leaf lift. Up travel is okay, but the opposite tire doesn't drop due to the spring arch. And if I could do it again, I'd go the SOA route. Maybe one day... If I have the fam, the seats are nice. If I'm wheeling hard and want to take extra crap, I lay the back seat down and throw a net in the back, (with cargo tie-down points installed, (super cheap/easy and very handy mod). I don't like a bunch of crap on top.

however I still miss the 89 Gwag that went up to Brent in Washington. That was a sweet, comfortable, great stereo truck with 4" lift, 33's and ARB's front and rear. Should never have sold it!! :)

I love my J-truck, but dearly miss my Waggy. It was a good one. Ideal would be to have one of each, but if it could only be one, it would be the J-truck for the sole reason that Jeep no longer, and probably never will, build fullsize pickups again.:(

I had the chance to do it over again, last year, and I did. I had an 81 waggy which I basically drove into the ground and needed to replace it.

I fixated on a WT Cherokee.

I wanted a great trail rig. It's hard to beat a WT Cherokee. The wide stance, the larger wheel opening, the looks.

I looked at a really nice red Honcho but the guy wanted silly amount of money for it.

So I found a WT cherokee and am very happy with it. Like some folks, I pulled the back seat out. I sure do miss the extra doors of the waggy, getting stuff in/out of the Cherokee is a pain compared to the waggy. Other than that I am very happy I went WT. I tossed a SF/SOA some big tires, swapped the drive train and I was good to go.

I would love a Red Honco, they just SCREAM 1980's. But will probably never own one.

If I stumbled upon a nice superwag I would consider picking one up for restoring.

I'd build a Waggy. I love the look of my W/T, but I got that pre-kid. Now a 4 door would be very nice. When I was trying to get my 85 G Wag to pass emissions it was so nice having them back doors. But right now I'd put a 67 or earlier Wag body on my Chero's frame. then make some M715 style flares, and cut the rear off like Tad's rig, throw a front d60 in it and I'd be in love.

I've had 2 wide track cherokees and long wheelbase J-truck 73 J4000 with the Qtrac -- loved and hated things about each one...

Love the look of the J-truck and hated the closed knuckle front-end and the long wheel base made it difficult to get around for a true driver.

Loved the 81 but it was a homogenized with a dash of later model grand wagoneer plus interior and an NP229 -- looked tough but still super comfy for long road trips and some wheeling on the side. It was about a perfect with the updated dash and real AC/Heat/Defrost controls...but I liked the functionality of the dash but disliked the style of looking at that thing.

Currently the 79 is turning into the "make it" as basic as it can be -- AC out, Qtrac will go in favor of a D20 - add my own comforts with aftermarket seats --

I want a Jtruck to go with the 79 -- but the J-truck needs to be a manual and for some reason the 6 cylinder would seem perfect for it.

So I wish I could vote for two -- mid-70's wagoneers are interesting too (no wood for me though) -

I currently have a Grand Wagoneer that I'm thinking about building for expedition use (think Troubled Child)

Aw shucks :o ...

I am still really glad I got a rig with 4 doors and would do it that way all over again. When I first started looking I was considering 2-door full size rigs (Blazer/Bronco/Ramcharger). I don't think I saw a single Cherk for sale... wasn't even considering a pickup. Probably just as well in the end... both are really cool but I couldn't live without the two extra doors. I'm in and out of those doors all the time just in daily use let alone off-road. With the little jeeper, I'd be selling a J-truck and looking for a GW, most likely.

My first FSJ was a 2 door Cherokee N/T. Loved wheeling it, but the 2 doors got to be a pain. I ended up with a GW later, one of those the price is too good to pass up kind of things. I've been slowly building it up to a trail worthy rig, still lots to do. But the 4 doors are the nicest upgrade I could have made. That being said, I'm still on the hunt for a J truck, as a potential DD/tow rig for the waggy when I can no longer drive it on the street.

It all comes down to what you want, how much work you're willing to put into it, what is available in your price range, etc. That's why I voted for Who Cares... It's an FSJ!!! B/c they are all cool IMHO.

Im lusting after a nice Chief project pretty bad. Ive got the two wags and the J20 (havent got into it too far yet). Ive always loved the look of the Chiefs. Im hoping to get to build one someday soon. Each and every one has its +'s and -'s though.

Well, I voted 2 door Cher. But now i'm feelin guilty. To do over again, it would still be my J10 SB. Ever since I got my truck i wanted a 2 door. But, if not for the truck, I would have never wanted a 2 door.

@ 32 yoa, i can't ever recall seeing a 2 door in person. But the kids and wife want to go too, so I desire a Super Cheif if were all dreamin.....

But, I will never fall out of love with my j10............So much so i can't even name her, nothing seems fitting....

I got a steal on the cherokee I have, the only thing I would change is it would be nicer to have 4-Doors when taking the family out. The benefit of the Truck would be somtimes your hauling stuff you dont want inside the cab(Hunting). So maybe a waggy with a half bed grafted on the back....... Would love to see pics if anyone has done that!

I have the 70 wag and I dont think I could ever part with it (even if it is a PITA at times) but if I did it would for sure be an early Jtruck

If only jeep made a factory crew cab... :D

I love my 4dr Chero, but it sucks when I need to haul wood, lumber, etc. (I've actually hauled wood inside a couple of times).

With all practicality considered, a j-truck better suits my needs. I was going to get a j-truck before I ended up buying this from my uncle (who got it from my dad, who got it from my grandpa, who got it new off the lot).

That's as good as saying "hey, I believe you can get one on the moon." Oh well, I guess I'll have to find a late 80's chebby crew 4x4 to fulfill my needs. :banghead:

I went with a J truck but believe it or not I live in the out skirts of okc and have seen very few wags but at leats twice a month see a J10 crusings the streets but their was nothing special about them just old men with their old stock trucks. Just yesterday I was in traffic and a J pulled up to the side of mine I didn't see even two hondas sitting at the light kind of gave me smerk

There are no blanket right or wrong answers here. For me, I chose a G-Wag because of the size and strength. I started my Jeeping in a series of CJs, TJs, eventually a couple of XJs, and finally a GW. As my family grew to three kids, the need for a bigger rig grew right along with it.

Ultimately I have moved more away from the desire of a rock crawling rig to more expeditionary stuff. However, the GW's 10 mpg just blew that idea all apart for me. Subsequently I decided to put a diesel in which dramatically increases my range and economy.

So for me, having a family of 5, the Grand Wagoneer is perfect. Lots of doors, lots of room, strong components even in stock form, surprisingly nimble on the trail and in spite of anecdotal evidence otherwise, my rig has been very trustworty.
