I have just used 80W/90W gear oil. Same as what you would use in the Diffs ;)

The shop manuals all call for u-joint grease...lots of it. A lot of people do use gear lube which will work fine so long as you can keep it inside the joint.
I've only used gear lube once(didn't know better at the time) and the knuckles started leaking almost immediately. Read the manual, took it apart put new seals in and went back to using grease.

the manual calls for gear oil, but i have always used grease. i got on an m715 site here a while back, dont remember which one, but, they had a copy of an armorers manual which said to use gear oil, and leakage is a design trait. the knuckle will seep, which will keep dirt and sand washed off the knuckle. sounds like a cover up for a poor design to me. the only worry i have with the greae is cavitation, i.e., when the shaft spins it will throw all the thick greas to the outside of the knuckle, which effectively robs the ujoint of any lubrication.
