OK......Sherman's steering column is kicking my butt!!!! The sterring wheel/column was like a wet wash rag. Cannot believe the DSPO ever drove it that way.......

Anyway, the little bearings (top & bottom) are history.

I called the GMC dealership and the Chevy dealership, neither acted like they knew what I was taling about. I called O'Reilly and Advanced Auto and they said bring what is left in and they will try to match the numbers.......

I haver looked and looked, no numbers.

What do I do now?????? Does anyone know the part number, size, or what I can do instead of these POS plastic & steel things.......I would be happy if I could put it back together w/out tilt right now!!!!!!

Really need some help on this one guys. I leave to go back offshore Wednesday evening and I am not too sure I can get this thing back together right now....much less two weeks from now!!!

TIA!!!! smile.gif smile.gif

I think Ihave one out of my old tilt column. As far as I know its a 78, tho the previous owner replaced it the column. I can take a pic for you later tonight, and yours free if its the right one.

Thanx Guys. Will check that part number tomorrow.

But it looks like I have bigger problems than just the bearings....

But it looks like I have bigger problems than just the bearings....like the whole upper part is real loose ....its the same work as changing the bearings you just need to tighten the screw's that hold the upper to the lower they can be done with a 1/4 drive and a wobble socket i think a 1/4 or 5/16 will do it if you can get them out and put locktite on them they get loose from grabbing the wheel and pulling yourself into the truck

I think a loose steering column must be a standard feature. Even if you are mechanically inclined, get a shop manual and plan out a good couple/few hours. It's a pain to get to those three? bolts, but well worth it. And DEFINATELY use the loctite.

Actually, after reading all the posts concerning the four bolts, I was prepared for much worse. I spent 15 minutes getting to the threaded roll pins (pivot pins) and 2 hours getting one of the pins out. I cleaned everything up with carb clnr, "lock tited" the four bolts, then found that there was something else wrong inside the column. I cannot shift past Reverse. Have checked the linkage (worx by hand just fine). It must be inside the column. I am assuming that it is a result of the four bolts coming completely loose, which caused the bearings to be trashed.....as well as other internal problems....
