I have what you might call a De-lima, I've been given a 1976 waggy (A combination of rusy and flower pot at this point!) with a 401, my other 401 is torn up and needs a total rebuild, given the great state of CA's restrictions this will ONLY go in a pre 1976 vehicle (75 and earlier for clarity) or I am wasting a good engine, it was rebuilt 20 years ago and parked, so it may or may not turn over, time will tell, so I'm thinking of a stock looking gremlin :D or perhaps a crew cab FSJ with Doug Thorley Tri Y headers :drivin:I hope this thing turns over! I might check on it when I get a chance...

i got the only CJ7 401 in the UK, so the only FSJ would be cool

Man, those 401s are worthless pieces of junk. You should just throw it away. Better yet, why don't you just give it to me and I'll dispose of it for you... :D

You had to ask????

Why not try to add turbo to it and then experiment with it for the fun of it??

I'm starting to think that 401's don't exist in my area. It is an elusive mythical creature

honest politicians

inexpensive medical visits

stress free work environments

free 401's

all things I believe do not exist...at least not in my world...:banghead:

Instead of risking cruelty to a 401 from the Cali smog dogs. You could release that 401 to free range in Texas & wind up in a nice Cherokee. Free ranging in texas with an aluminun intake & a cam & some pisitons would make one of us feel great. I would even pay shipping & Let you come visit every once in a while. :drivin: :fsj:  :rolleyes2:

Congrats! My vote is drop it in a Gremlin or Hornet and drive it like you stole it. :drivin:

Funny thing about the "stock-looking Gremlin" with a 401 ... many moons ago, I drove a stock 401 Gremlin with 4-speed. Dad wouldn't let me buy it, said he wanted me to turn 18 or some such nonsense.

Great find! Prelube it, crank it by hand and hope for the best!

Hone
Re-ring
CAM
a little head work
Good set of headers
nicer performer intake or a airgap would really be nice
Stick it in and run it

you could run it in a later rig since it looks the same on the outside as a 360. You could just tell the smog tech it is a 360 because the only way of knowing its a 401 is to crawl underneath it, and there not going to know that:D

I'd hate to choke it off with a 2bbl and wine cork exhaust, the '79 is about to recieve a 6.2 diesel :D

I picked up my first 401 a few years back, had to turn down a second for reason of $$$, the chevy will get a 400 TPI with late heads and a low/mid range cam, I was about to diesel it when I realized all the joys of a mean small block :D

I've never seen a 401 in an FSJ perhaps you would consider sending it to me and letting me look it over for say the next few decades. :D

A warmed small block is only entertaining till you have to stop and fill the tank.

A 6bt in an early dodge has moutains of potential. mount the chief body to the top of the dode frame and have the Smog ref verify that the dodge frame was used.

my 3/4 ton with 5 speed, 4x4 witha 6bt. of course head studs, twin turbos using the stock turbo on top, turned up pump and set of injectors csot me less tahn $6k truck included, clutch etc. put down 543 hp to the rear wheels and right at 1068 ft/lbs. i dont need to tell you how it did at the track lets jsut say under 12 felt pretty darned good and driving it home gettig 18-19 mpg hand calculated on the highway was even more fun.

Food for thought. i never had a spark plug fail on me, i didnt have em and that p7100 pump on that thing never missed a tick.

going to the track and running under 12 un the qtr was fun, driving home towing the 400 sbc powered chevyII in a loaded gooseneck and getting 12 mpg was great. being able to spin the tires at 1/4 throttle at 65 mph while towing a 14k lbs laoded gooseneck on dry pavement while trying to merge into traffic. Priceless.

changing your rear tires every 20k miles. very annoying

I miss my old 69 cheby with a passenger car 10.5:1 396 and truck 4 speed that truck used to really put down some ponies but that diesel truck put it to shame.

build the cheby 400 in a pickup, spend all of your life savings on fuel, suck on diesel smoke when you try and race one thats built and watch a lighter rig powered by an amc pass you by

Build the 401 stick it in a cj5 and then watch your life pass before you and suck on even worse dieselsmoke, still spend all your savings on fuel and don't worry about a lighter rig beating you up, you'll be too busy trying to get teh front tires back on the pavement so you can steer things again

I love the Gremlin idea. I love watching old Gremlins smoke new Camaros and Mustangs. Talk about insult to injury!

FWIW, I am yet to see a smog station in San Diego that could tell a 401 from a 360. It is somewhat of a waste of 401 to run it with a 2-bbl carb, but my brother's been doing that for many years, and didn't have any issues with smog check (we live in mandatory test-only zone).

plenty of late model 401 powered fsj's in ca. jsut make sure they can'tfind anything that denotes it being a 401. make sure it runs and make sure the smog equiptment is there.

what ever you don't part with that 401.

It's less work to buy a pre SMOG truck and fix it up than swap intake manifolds and possibly exhaust twice every 2 years
