Breather hose

I noticed recently thata breather hose with a funny valve on the end fell out as i drove across canada. I had repaired the hose, and upon reinstallation, found out that the threads didn't catch into ... what is it in the front? differantial maybe?

How likely is it that I'll get something in there and cause damage?

If the hose came loose from the differential end it would be likely that some minor dust and moisture would go into the differential, not much to worry about, you could change the grease and be in good shape. But, if you submerge the front axle in water/mud it will contaminate the differential and the grease should definately be changed.
