Ok, i never payed much attention to it, but i have recently run across some info that just got me all confused. i Have a np219, my jeep is 1980, i have a floor lever with 2hi,4hi,n,4low and locking hubs.... so is it selectrac? Commandtrac? quadratrac?? i have looked at all the tech articles, my manuals, other sorces, and i find verying resorces saying it could be any one of them. I hear the 219 is basically a q-trac, then i hear its selectrac... but now i think its comandtrac... i dont know! i want to know because the q-trac is full time, but the c-trac isnt, but the s-trac is but it isnt, and i dont understand :(
i have just gone by my 80' full size jeep 4x4 manual that says, lock the hubs while parked, then while in neutral shift into 4 hi or low. iv only ever used 4hi. but some info iv heard says shift first, then lock, and others say lock first then roll then shift....but it seems to depend on the 'trac' s, q or c
so whats up guys, have i been doing it wrong the whole time? redface.gif i mean it works fine, but ive only ever used it like 6 times since iv had it and only once for fun longer then a few minutes other then just getting up a gravel hill or up some ice.
and whats the differences between the kinds of "tracs" ??
ps: please dont think im an idiot :D i dont 4wheel very often
The 219 is also called a Quadra-trac. It's no way even remotely related to a BW/QT from 73-79. AMC was trying to sell a new tcase on the old tried and true BW/QT's reputation. Or they had a bent sense of humor and just tried to confuse us. It worked ;)
It's a moot point though if your shift pattern is 4h/4l/2h. That's the np208 Command-Trac tcase w/manual unlocking hubs std. That was the stock/std tcase in 80(219 was optional). If you had a 219 the pattern would be 4h/4l/LOCK w/no 2WD function at all and no unlocking hubs.
Lock your hubs first then shift the tcase. If your hubs are locked and you're on a "slick road only" you can shift into 4H at anytime(reasonable speeds, 35 or so) but to get into 4L you need to be stopped or maybe crawling a bit to get stuff lined up. Just don't try it "at speed".

wow! thank you joe! for a year i've been thinking its a 219 (because of the chilton manual), well.. that solves alot of questions!
but the shift pattern on the lever says "<2hi/N/>4hi,4lo" is that still the same thing?

(because of the chilton manual), well.. Yeah put the Childrens manual back in the outhouse where it belongs or keep it in cubby hole for when the next hurricane hits FL and the stores are out of TP. Those things are worse than a Haynes and have screwed up more people than they've helped. But the pages individually can be handy in times of need. smile.gif
Neutral should be between 4H and 4L as in 2H-4H-N-4L behind a stick trans or backasswards behind an auto tranny.

Joe, i will remeber that in our next hurricane smile.gif i had bought every manual i coud find along with hanes... welp, i guess count that one less for the library :D so is all the other info correct thought? like i should have an amc 7/8 rear axle? and crys727 AT? oh gezz... now im gonna have to question everything
:D :D
The rest is correct. The rear axle is usually just referred to as an AMC20 or M20. The front is a Dana 44. The trans is a Chryco TF727 but it's in a Jeep specific case so if you ever trash it one from a Dodge etc won't bolt up to it but the internals are the same.
