trying to figure out where this gas tank came from, it was in my jeep and I think it was stock, but I can;t be sure. When i took it to the radiator shop they said that it looked like it came out of an old dodge trunk<strike> make that truck. it mounts behind the seat in the cab.
wondering if anybody recognizes it? it got all munged up from old gas and I'd like to replace it if possible but need to know where to start hunting. aftermarket options ok as well

I dunno what it came out of (maybe a Ford truck?), but I've got one just like it in my '63 J-200. It was there when I got the truck, and I don't intend to leave it in there. I just don't like the idea of the tank inside the cab.

me either, but the truck is mostly being used as a ranch work truck so the chances of being T-Boned in an accident are pretty low - but its still a danger.
so you had both tanks? the in-cab and the underbed one?

The underbed tank was gone, but the filler and everything for it are still there. I've since gotten a good used stock underbed tank for it. I did consider using both tanks - that would have been pretty cool! This truck has Buick 350 and TH400 from a '69 J-truck in it, and I imagine it will be pretty thirsty (IF I ever get around to finishing it...).
The in-cab tank fit so well, and the filler came out in such a logical place that I often thought that it might have been stock, but I've been unable to find any reference to it in my service manuals.
My '65 J-200 (my AVITAR) has the under-bed tank only.

tried a ford truck forum and posted basically the same message, but first response was a "check the pictures" along with a "you should make a financial contribution" -- and no he wasn;t kidding:
-----------------------
Because this is your first post here and you are enquiring about Ford info, the only thing I can suggest is to look at some of the galleries here and hopefully someone will have a photo of it.
Look at early 72-74 trucks.
Care to make a donation to support this FORD site ?
And no,I'm NOT being sarcastic.

digging around for a used one now, thanks for the help everybody
dang, figured out 2 jeep things in one day - i guess that means i've filled my quota for the next month.
Tonka J200, was your tank mounted on wood blocks and attached to the back wall with galvinized straps and sheetmetal screws?

Whoever put mine in did a really nice job - I remember that being one of the things that made it look factory. They might have even welded in the mounting stuff from the donor truck's cab.
When I took it out, I left everything in place. I just unbolted the straps and took out the tank. Now I'm curious. I'll have to go out and have a look when I get home...

I have that very same tank in my truck as well! At first, I thought it was a factory option, but later learned Jeep never put them in the cabs. Could this be a dealer option install? Mine was even painted the goldish color of my dash to match. Let me know what you find out cause I'd like to replace the sending unit with one that works and if this is Chevy parts, I can guarentee someone still makes a sending unit for it! The stock tank under the bed was missing on mine when I bought it, but a replaced it with an MTS poly unit. The diverter valve is located near the driverside rear seat mount. I plan on leaving mine in and using it. I love the extra range it gives.

Very cool! Thanks guys! If it were a Jeep only part I'd be SOL!
Just went out and looked at the 70 GMC I have with the behind the seat tank. Looks very similar, approx 65x19x6, holds 21 gal's.

Check out some of the radiator shops or car resto places . Some of them specialize or are able to clean out old tanks and reseal them better than new!

I used to have a 66 Chevy truck and that sure looks like the tank I pulled out of it. Leaked like crazy so I swapped in a later model (mid70s) behind the seat tank. I had to modify the brackets a little but it fit ok. Its not illegal to have a in cab tank but it can get a little smelly in the cab if the hoses arent in good shape.

Umm, from what I have seen, Jeep did have in cab tanks. I have seen about 3 old J's with in cab ones, and the ones under the box too. sure thought it was an option.

I know my truck is 100% stock (sat for most of its life), and it has one.

Maybe they were options after all (dealer?). Just haven't found data to support. The fact that some of us have the exact same tank in our trucks pretty much confirms that they were either factory or dealer installed.

my setup is pretty bush-league, i'd have to go with dealer installed (wish I knew which dealer it was sold thru, any way to find out?)
http://www.tworock.com/mjd/jeep/tank_supports.jpg
these wood blocks go on the floor behind the seat, one on the drivers side, the other on the passenger side. the black circled spot is where the bottom lip of the tank mates to the block. the cutout underneath that is just wide enough to fit between the back wall and the raised seam on the floorboard behind the seat. on the block with the black circle, the left side of the block would be against the back wall.
the straps were screwed into the rear wall, and a copper tube came off the sending unit on the tank and went thru the floorboard. The tube ran near the transmission/xfer case crossmember and to a fuel selector switch mounted under the drivers side on the frame. (have partnumber for this if anybody needs it). it was pretty poorly setup, big kink in the hose which would cause fuel delivery problems -- which is probably why the tank was left full of old gas when it was parked years ago.
All in all a pretty poor setup. I'd be interested in hearing how some of the other tanks were installed, and to see if anybody elses were mounted with these fine wood blocks.

I'll spend the extra $50 and get a new one.
but its a good idea
