77 Cherokee Chief stock with a 4BBL, what carb is it? What would be a good replacement?

Probably a 4350 Motorcraft. If so, it has a unique spread-bore pattern.
Typically only the stock carb will pass emissions inspection. If your vehicle is exempt, you'll need an adapter to use an aftermarket carb - then I think the most popular new carb it the Holley Truck Avenger. For a used carb, a Rochester Quadrajet is popular on (maybe) an early AMC Holley-pattern manifold. Don't know if there's an adapter from 4350 to Q-Jet.

More than likely a Motocraft 4350 spreadbore.
From what others have posted here, switching to a squarebore (adapter) carb from Holley or Edelbrock is a good move.
I am getting a Holley Truck Avenger for XMas (I hope!) and am VERY excited! Although, my 4350 after a rebuild, runs great.

Thanks guys, I really need to get a manual for this thing. Most likely I will do a intake/carb swap.

I would just try to rebuild that carb first. A rebuild kit shouldn't cost that much and those carbs are very easy to strip down and put back together. I've heard from quite a few people that they work pretty well off-road and provide decent power. Also the spread-bore design will net you better fuel ecomony than a square-bore, if that matters.
