OK, thanks for all the ideas. I just bought this truck (at night) and am bringing it home Saturday. I just "visited" it and found that the PO who stated the TC problem had put mismatched tire sizes on the rear! He has a 31x10.5 on the left rear and one 30x9.5 on the right rear. The mechanic that suggested the TC problem quoted him 1300.00 to repair the TC. The problem started just after he replaced the rear tire with the larger one...imagine that! I did chect the transmission fluid and it is not burned but is dirty and not bright red anymore. The truck has 174k miles on it and a newly rebuilt engine that runs really smooth. More later when I get it home.

I have an 87 GW that will not move when the transmission gets hot! Once the truck cools off, she moves as usual for a few miles untill it gets hot again. One mechanic has driven the truck and told me that the problem is the transfer case and the tc needs to be replaced? Any experience with this? Is it really the tc or is it the transmission?

Thanks,

Dennis

I'm no tranny guy, but could it be a linkage of some sort? Have you flushed and replaced ALL the tranny fluid? Did it look/smell burnt?

Dang, all these atlanta folks showing up! I dont know much about your situation that can help but welcome anyway! Is the tranny cooler hooked up?

G*d I hope I'm not a tranny guy.
I don't even like automatics and thats all I seem to end up with..
OK
We assume you gots an automatic.
First, do what bigblue says.
Pull your trans dipstick and check out the fluid. Color (nice clear red) and smell (you'll know it if its been burnt!).
Then. clean it off and warm up the engine. Chock your wheels, put it Neutral and check the level. Neutral not Park, I like to put in D and R then N, just to fill all the circuits I can. Check the dipstick reading.
This will probably tell you the entire story.

Second. check the Transfer case fluid. It has a drain plug and a fill plug. This should give you a sense of the condition of your T/C. I can't think of how something in the T/C would disengage when hot - but you need one of the real wagmechanics for that question.

BTW. The plugs on my 1985 NP229 T/C require an 1 3/16" socket or wrench, or something like that if I recall right.

Yes. could be lack of kickdown linkage causing it. But first see if the fluid is burned.

Well, don't go back to that mechanic... http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/wink.gif

No, seriously, if your NP229 is in 2wd, then heat would have no affect on its drive to the rear wheels.

If anything, I'd suspect the internal seals or front-pump in the transmission; if worn, they won't allow the tranny to develop sufficient pressure to engage the clutches, and you'll lose drive.

But elaborate on the symptoms; does it start slipping more and more until it simply refuses to move, or does it go out all at once? Does it move in any gear when it gets hot? (D, 2, L, R?) Is there any sound coming from the tranny? How does the fluid smell? The fluid level is fine, right?

It may be what was wrong with my '88. Exactly the same symptoms. I bought a transmission pressure and checked the line pressure on the transmission. It started out okay, but after about 5 minutes it started to fall to near 0. When I pulled my trans pan, the filter was completely clogged with metal and there was a lot of metal in the bottom of the pan. My torque converter had come apart and filled the trans with metal. The transmission wouldn't go not because it was worn out, but because it had no hydraulic pressure to engage. I found a transmission mechanic at a Dodge dealer in town and he rebuilt it for me in his home garage. Parts are cheap for the 727. My total was around $350 parts/labor/fluid/filter/etc. Plus two weekends of pulling/re-installing on my part. Works great now!
