View Full Version : 60's Vin Question regarding titles...
Ok, to sum up my uncle had bought a Wagoneer from a person he had worked with about 15 years ago. The person got laid off not long after he sold it and no title was ever transferred. Frustrated with it, he is selling it to me and I am paying to get the title reclaimed.
Before filing an abandoned vehicle claim I am hoping to find the guy through a title search. Before going down to the license branch though, I am trying to figure out this vin and how it would look on a title.
I don't know what year it is. The vin tag on the drivers side door tag says (there is no vin on the dash or anywhere else I can find):
Kaiser Jeep Corporation
1414C 506***
Every vin decoder site I have been to says there should be 12 or 13 numbers.
Is this vin really just 10 numbers? What am I missing?
It is badged as a V8 which means it should be 66 or later correct?
Thoughts?

At least a few states titled vehicles by the engine serial number for a while. Not sure when they stopped that and went with the body serial number but if they were still doing that into the 60s it'll make it much more interesting for you.

1414c506 is the VIN just missing the sequential serial number part and the model year isn't in the VIN untill 1972.
Thanks for the replys.
The asterisks I used replaced the last 3 digits, to prevent scam artists that may be browsing.
Just trying to get my info together before heading to the license branch.
At least knowing that other people have only 10 numbers in their vin is reassuring. Now to try and figure out what year it is :)

There are a few ways to determine the year.
If it only has a V-8 emblem on the fender, it is the '65 version.
The V-8 with the Jeep emblem makes it newer.
Other than that, the year is determined on the time of sale and original title.
A '65 version could have been titled '66.
An old NADA book would show you the vin numbers based on sales during a specific year, and possibly what they consider the introduction of the model year.
Thanks for the replys.

Best bet is run the VIN through the DMV and see what it's been registered as. You can get a clue to era by decoding the eng build code but that doesn't mean eng build year is same as year installed. Doan know about IN DMV hoops but here in WA I wouln't touch a rig w/o curent owners name on a valid title.
Good luck.
If ya want too and feel comfortable PM me the Complete VIN and I may be able to come up with a model year. All done just between you and me no web BS etc.

506*** might be at the end of the Kaiser production run. The last number for Feb 1967 is 1414C 107191. If you can post a few photos, other members can narrow it down. Be sure to include body badges, engine, and dash. Look by the heater core for a body trim and paint code plate. I might be able to find the year with the paint code if it is one of the color/color shade they used for only one year.

Here are some pics.
Fortunately we have provisions for abandoned vehicles here, but its much cheaper to find the original owner.
I am going to run the vin on Monday, just different, so I want to know more about the vin before going in to the PD.
Its rough, but I am not shy when it comes to welding but the important parts are intact. I didn't have the dash shot when I took these photos.

It's a '65 model.
The V-8 emblem and the Jeep emblem are the indicators.
This came out in April of 1965. The 1966 model would have had the different fender emblem.
As to what it is titled, that's anybody's guess.
Thats great. Talking to the Sheriff, he said at least knowing the year would speed things up a lot.
Thanks again.
If I have to file an abandoned vehicle claim then I have to, but I should be able to track the guy down this way.
