Seriously, I just came home with a 401 out of a 78 wagoneer and he said I can have for $200. Not braggin' but hell I'm sure a happy camper!
So, the block is chevy orange and he said compression is around 137 or higher on all cylinders. My question is, do I just drop it in or rebuild it while its out to save time and $ in the long run? He said its been rebuilt..next ? Is it ok to rebuild a block that's already been rebuilt? Looking for your opinions!!! Thanks everyone!!! :D

I'd double check the compression, make sure all the cylinders are close to each other. If that checked out, I'd run it, myself.

I just hope I stumble across a deal like that when I'm ready to go 401 shopping... you know, years down the road.

And I just sent 6 worn out 401s to the scrap yard yesterday......
Should have painted them orange and offered them for sale.

Yep. been offering them for free to pick up here in Sactown and those that contacted me assumed they were beyond rebuilding.....so I sent them to the scrapper along with a bunch of steel and sheet metal.
I kept the best one for my project Jeep. Not much room here so they had to go. :(

I'd check compression as well as the bearings since it's out. If the bearings check out ok run that baby.

$200 is all it's worth unless he has the paperwork that the motors been rebuilt.

Sounds like a deal to me. The last 401 I bought was $400 and I drove it on the trailer.

I did hear it run the night before we pulled it. And it sounded really good. I'm a freak so I'll probably have it rebuilt before I drop it in. Could be a long time unless I intentionally try to blow up the current motor!
