it takes a flexplate spicificaly for the 401 to 727. it was used in some of the amc cars. i'm sure someone will jump in with the info. i do know they are avalible new for something like 50 bucks.

It's the same flexplate, except for the balance weight, you'll need to duplicate the balancing of your current flexplate or have the whole assy balanced (not a simple job).

When I had my engine balanced, I had two flexplates done, if one goes, I have a spare that's balanced just for this engine.

Come to think of it, I think the 401 only came with a TH400 behind it?

The 401/727 flex plates are still avail new. Ask for one for a 72+ 401 equipped Rambler Matador, Javelin or Ambassador. As Jeepjake mentioned above the 401's used in FSJ's all had a TH400 behind them.

Go to American Performance (http://www.oldcarparts.com). They'll have what you want. It has to be specific for a 401 to 727 because the AMC V-8's are externally balanced. Same goes for the vibration damper. And these folks are great. More than helpful. Good Luck.
