Need some help. I'm currently on the road and my '89 GW (144k) all of a sudden stalled and won't restart. It's been running fine, just had the carb. rebuilt, isn't overheated. The starter and battery are both strong but the engine doesn't seem to be getting any gas. Is it probably the fuel pump? If so, being an amateur, can anyone tell me where it is and the best way to replace it? If it isn't, can anyone offer advice on what to check??? Desperately need quick help. Thanks in advance to all that respond...

Could be the ignition module. It's easy to replace and readily availabel for under $30. Good luck.
BTW it's the silver box on the driver's side fender under the hood.

Check for spark as well. I had to replace distibutor caps and rotors on a couple of my FSJs when I thought it was a gas issue. Quick and easy: squirt some starting fluid down the throat of the carb. If it starts, check the fuel filter on the carb, then the fuel pump. If it doesn't start, look at the distributor or ignition module. Start with the easy stuff first, that's usually where it is.

Take the air cleaner off and look down into the carb, with the engine off. Open up the throttle by hand and you should be able to see some gas squirting into the carb barrells. If not, then you're out of gas or your fuel pump quit.
The fuel pump is located on the drivers side of the engine, and is toward the front. Kinda underneath the power steering pump. You can replace it with a 9/16 socket, a screwdriver for the hose clamps, and a 7/16 end wrench for the top fuel line fitting (at least those are the sizes on my '77).
Check for spark. Pull off a spark plug wire and remove a spark plug. re-install plug wire onto the plug, and lay it on the engine, near a good ground. Crank the engine, you should see a spark occur between the plug gap. If not, you may need a new ignition moduale.
good luck!

I would second that it's the ignition box on the fender.....

ECU bad= no spark
easy fix, to check diagnose, heat w/ heat gun hit with mallet, if it starts or tries to fire and sounds different from before ECU bad.

Being a victim of the ECU, I would replace that without thinking about it.
It's real easy to find, cigar shaped box over on the driver's side fender well.

In the spark department, I once had a bad connection at my ignition coil. My '82 360 had the Ford coil with a plastic piece that covered the two wires connected to the top of the coil. Somehow the plastic cover thing was slipping loose, disconnecting a wire and causing me to stall while driving.
Removed plastic piece and reconnected the wires.
Also experienced the ignition module failing too.

Just had to replace the ignition module on my 76 cherokee, it was acting like it was out of gas. Looked down the carb and could see it was getting gas, but no spark. After banging on the box it would start!! Replaced box and no trouble since!!

Is that ignition module really only $17? I was thinking I should get a spare for my 86 GW.

I have my tail between my legs. The old girl was just out of gas. She was on a slight decline, but the gas gauge read a quarter tank! From now on, I will always carry a full gas can. Thanks to all that replied quickly. What's the best way to fix the gauge problem?
Always roll your beast to level ground. I stalled on a steep hill once....rolled backwards to level ground and was able to fire her up.
The best way to fix the gas guage is to replace it. You have a GW so there should be an access panel in the back so you don't have to actually drop the gas tank to replace it.
