I looked at a Cherokee today and have a few questions. It has been repainted and I thought it was a WT :hide: yup, I don't know how to tell. The fender flairs were larger than what is on a Wagoneer and it had an emblem of an Indian Chief with an S on the dash. A few dents and rusted flairs, torn seat. The frame is good. It has the 360 , auto ,with lock out front hubs. What model is it? I drove it and it seemed to drive, stop ok. He wants $1000 for it and I haven't seen one for sale on Ebay so I don't know what they go for.

WT's have flares that stick out 4-5" from the body, where-as an NT has a rolled fender lip that sticks out 1/2" from the body. They can range in price from a few hundred to a few grand. If the rust isn't too bad and there aren't a ton of things to fix, it's not a bad price. But, pics would help :)

If you can drive it & nothings falling off it's probably worth it. It depends on how many quarts it gets to the mile.:drivin: :fsj:

I believe it's the Model 17. You will have a lot of tailgate problems.

OK, it does look like it is a 17. Elderly gentleman has it. He used it to hunt and fish with before he moved to KY fifteen years ago. Lots of small dents around it with a larger one in the quarter panel. Flares are rusted through on the backs of them. He still thinks that they are worth a lot and only went down to a grand on the price because he is moving out of state and doesn't want to take it too. Damaged exhaust from hitting something and a dead battery. I think my wife will kill me if I bring it home. I have been wanting a FSJ for quite a while but have 2010 Camaro. Have to think about it.:banghead:

its too bad your the way in kentucky if rust isn't a deterring factor for you. I have a 80 Cherk sitting in my back yard that runs and Drives that I plan on just parting out when I get back from Iraq.

From my experience, it's better to see 800.00, than to talk about 1000.00, show him the cash, bet he takes it ;) .

Did the truck have title? Why do you want to go to county clerk's office?

thats incorrect.

all the "s" indian head and the earlier rectangle "s" medallion meant that it had the "s" package which was a step up from base. it basically just meant that it had a nicer interior. a wide wheel/wide-track cherokee is only a model 17 cherokee, nothing else. it could be a base, "s", chief, golden eagle, golden hawk, laredo, those are just upgraded packages. if it has j-truck style flares then its a wide track.

As I said it is an eldery gentleman, and I mean he is a gentleman, a really cool old dude that I enjoyed shooting the bull with. We have about five inches on the ground and some sleet and he is too scared to drive out in it to transfer the title today. Too old to drive in it and I really shouldn't try to drive in my Camaro either.
Thanks for the advice. I found the trim levels in the tech library but had to dig to find it but if I had looked at the readers rides, I would have known it was a WT. The wide flairs on it made me think it was a WT, but all the emblems on the outside had been removed when it was repainted...WHITE! Really cheap paint job as the jams are still dark grey. It is missing the windshield trim at the top but overall, I think 800 dollars wasn't bad. Of course I'll put the pics up when I get it.
Man those old Jeeps are so cool :fsj:

while we're calling heads out for being incorrect, didn't they stop making golden eagles in mid 1980? and didn't golden hawks end after the second half of 1980?

or am i incorrect?

yep, i was refering to different the packages that came on a model 17 cherokee through the years. i am amazed that amc wasnt sued by whoever owned the studebaker rights becasue of golden hawk, or could that be the reason they where only made half a year?

I bought and it does not in any way look as good as depicted in these photos. It is going to need a starter, floor board patched and flairs on the back. Blower motor is slow and will not go to defrost. Oh well. Got it for $800. Didn't have any software to reduce the size of the photos so that is why I had to link.

You can resize them in Photobucket. Just mouse over your pic and it will give you options at the top of the pic. Just select "edit" or "resize", I dont remeber which. You can also pre-select your upload size, so it will be right when you upload.
