This week i was starting the truck every evening after work. Well I skipped two days and I tried to start it Last night and it didnt start, jsut crank adn crank and crank. Today i whipped out the starting fluid and the truck started up right quick. Besides my choke not being connected or hooked up, is there any other reasons it would be finicky to start? With the HEI it should be easier to start.

Check your power valve. Pull off the vacuum line connected to the power valve after you start it and let it run for a while ( so the bowl gets full) shut off the engine. If gas comes out you need a new power valve. If this is not the problem check your fuel lines for rot, and your in tank filter sock for blockage, and then your fuel pump.

The choke is the big problem. You may want to get that fixed

X2 Fix your choke and it will start a lot easier. (thats what it's for)

I have wired open a sticky choke in the past, and you have to give it like 7 or 8 pumps before you even try to turn it over. Then you have to feather the throttle to keep it running. It is alot easier to fix the choke.

If you are trying to start it in the cold with no choke, you are going to have to pour some fuel on it. I would pump it 4 times and crank it for a few seconds, then pump it twice and crank, and repeat until it fires.
In addition to all the above, you might have worn out your accelerator pump from so much pumping trying to start and keep running with no choke.
