View Full Version : best performance vs. $ ?
would like some advice on what works best to improve power with the least $. Already have a Jacobs ignition and wires, I think my next step is a K&N filter in the stock housing, and then a 3" exhaust from the headpipe union to a 3" cat to a 3" flowmaster. are there any other cost-effective mods I can do short of carb/manifold/cam changes? or efi conversions? need to tow 5000 lbs with as much ease as possible! Everyone's input is appreciated, like to know what works best!

They're not cheap, but how about gears? If you are pulling a trailer you get a lot of bang for the buck with better gearing.

A new, 3" exhaust will go a long way to improving performance and mileage.
The next step is to change gear ratios, which can get expensive, or step up to a 4bbl carb and matching intake (this in and of itself will lighten the load by about 60 to 70 lbs.), or go to fuel injection. The carb/manifold will typically run about $500, gearsets installed, about $750 to $1000, and fuel injection will be about $750 to $1000.
After that, it's camshaft and timing set (if you change the cam, you should change the timing set, just becuase you're there, and the original is probably worn).

Check out this site:

Especially their "Project MPG".....take note of all the things they put into that Ford. They raised mpg by 50+% and other areas improved dramatically too! Worth a read if you are interested in some ideas!
Some other ideas on their site too....enjoy!
