I have both types of starters in my trucks (Ford and Mitsubishi), and I've never found the need for a heat-shield.
Are you burning up starters?

Hi Bob,
New starter, battery and cables.Starts up fine when cold. When doing in town driving(stop/go and slow speed)and I stop the starter sounds like the battery almost dead.Come back an hour or more later and she starts right up.Yet if I drive along the highway or on roads without alot of lights ect it starts fine(same temp in both cases according to the gauge)My theory is that at the low speeds there is not enough air flow.I figure some sort of heat shield might reduce the starter frow absorbing radient heat
