I have an '88 Grand Wagoneer. One of the valves sounds like it's starting to go. Does anyone know if Mopar's 360 Magnum 300hp crate motor will be compatible?

I'm no expert apprazer (or speller) but wouldn't it be cheaper to pull the head and fix it, might as well redo the whole top end while your at it. Not to pry, but what are your symptoms?

Got her back from the wife with a tap. I was driving for the better part of a day and she started to pop and sputter under load. That went away but she idles rough and has a mean shimmy at low rpm while taking off. At the higher speeds, she smoothes out. I will compress test before anything major, but I figured why get heads done on a motor w/ 125K on it that spits oil out as fast as you can put it in. I have been reading other posts on this topic but don't see anyone who has tried it.

Jeeps affiliation with Chrysler will get a lot of people (who don't know)telling you your 88GW's 360 is a chrysler. It's not, it's an AMC motor. You can swap a lot of things in, if you wanted a dodge 360 you would need a dodge TF727 to go with it. The output on many dodge 727's will attatch to your NP229 transfer case. You mount the engine/trans combo letting the transmission mount position your engine, then rig motor mounts. But, this is an engine swap with all the "little things" that go with it. In the end, is it really worth it?? I think it depends on how much you hate the AMC 360, or how much you love the Mopar 360. If you are going to all the trouble of a swap, why not go something big, like a 440 or a GM big block, or deisel?? or stick with the original for ease and dependability(??).

I have no love for Mopar, but I believe they make a reliable motor. That is the most important thing to me. I pull a boat so I thought a little extra hp wouldn't hurt. I don't want to go too powerful and start breaking things. I just figured w/ a crate motor I might get another 100k versus rebuilt, who knows? I always thought AMC didn't "make" anything themselves but rather pieced things together. i.e. ford starter w/ gm ignition so on. Can't believe they used the same # combinations as Mopar in the same years.(360/727)

There was no definate proof. But I think the holes will line up but then then the flywheel/torqueconverter on the engines are different and the starter on the AMC is on the Pass side and on the Driver side on the Mopar.
I've seen a CJ with a Mopar 340 and he said it fit right in. Maybe but then theres the exhaust, motor mounts.
Also a while back someone was selling a Waggy with a Mopar 318 in it but he didnt have the details on the swap as he bought it like that.

The AMC 727 is only part Mopar. The internals are the very same. As for the housing, Chrysler used a longer output shaft which required a long tailshaft housing. To complicate things they used numeruose different ones for different applications. But the Jeep 727 was made by Chrysler for AMC, as was the TH 400, with the AMC bolt pattern in the housing.
