My Tailgate window regulator is Broken, and my rear tailgate window is down. Need to raise it and get it to a shop. Have taken off the back carpet panel and metal plate, but cannot see how to get to any mechanism that allows me to manually raise the window. Also, what is the best source for buying a new regulator for a 91 GW. Thank you all for the help.:banghead:

I just took the regulator out of mine...3 bolts and unplugging the wires.

Is there a way to raise the window manually? Did you have this problem? Also, looing for a good source for buying a new regulator. Suggestions?

Ahhh the age old rea window issue....

Two ways to do this if the motor is toast:

Reach in and remove the washer clips at each end of the regulator arms, pull the arms away from the lower window track and push the window up and block with an appropriate length rod or wood block.

The HillBilly way is to use a flat roofing prybar or similar L shaped device, slide it under the large regulator gear enough to get the teeth to jump a few gears. This is done without the glass in of course. Once you get the arms up high enough you can slide the glass and track back in, lower it all the way down, close the gate and from the inside reach in and push the glass all teh way up. Once UP, you push the regulator arm end pins back into the lower channel slots.

It's difficult and ugly, but it will work.

The proper method is to pull the glass, then the regulator assembly. Usually there are two bolts that are hidden behind the gears that require you jump a few gear teeth to get to if the motor doesn't work. Be careful with prying on the gears as they will get destroyed should you be to vigorous.

Now would be a good time to start hu8nting for a manual regulator assemble.

Good Luck!

This could be one of the worst jobs on an FSJ. Since your window is down, put the tailgate down. Now look way down in the far corners and you will see the metal track that the window sits in and a post with a clip on the end sticking through this track. You need to get in there with a long screwdriver and pry that clip off both side. Then once the clips are off, push the studs down out of the window track and the window will slide.
Many, many people have taken a hole saw and cut a hole in the tailgate to make getting the clips on and off easier and I don't blame any of them.

For REAL! I've seen about 20 tailgates with those holes over the last few months. Don't blame em a bit since I have my share of scars from doing this over the years.

OR you could just call Zack and he'll send you a brand new one (manual assembly, that is). Just did this myself b/c mine crapped out on me. Whichever way you go, make sure you install the part that goes on the OUTSIDE first, then the gears, etc on the inside. It just won't line up and you will have to do it over and over and over and over, until you either figure it out for yourself or someone tells you to put the part that goes on the OUTSIDE first. Ask me how I know. And use the green permatex sleeve retainer (which is NOT the same as the green permatex thread locker, obviously) to hold the brass retaining sleeve on the handle portion. Just trust me on this. Good luck. Alex

I drilled a 2" hole to make it easier.

then used a electrical panel plug to cover the hole.
and bent the cover to fit the contour

the foam part is inside the tailgate.

The problem is most likely in the rear key switch. I just jumped the switch out. I have also replaced a few rotted out channels . I hope you have deep pockets if you want a shop to fix this.

In the "tech library" at the top of the page there is a whole section on "tailgate" there is bunch of info there that will save you a whole lot of time and trouble and probably some blood too. at least it helped me that way.

a good hole saw is your friend

I just replaced my tailgate window last weekend, I will drill a couple holes before I get back in there again (great idea), but I am having some difficulties with the window rolling all the way down. The drivers side seem to lower about and inch faster that the passenger side of the window when the window gets to about 1/2 way it gets to bound up to move any further, the track appears the same on both sides, do I have the window in backwards or something?

Tank, have you tried bypassing the switches and direct wiring the motor to see if it really is bad? I rewired my gate last weekend, and found out my rear switch wasn't working because the front switch didn't work right. I used a portable jump start battery and a cigarette lighter power plug to test the motor, and it was alright. Bad switch connections.
