Welllll...

I'm driving along around 35 mph and the tranny acts like a manual that pops outta gear. Finagle with it a bit and all I hear is a whirring sound like gears not engaging in a manual. :(

So I decide to see if 4wd will pull it to get me home... no dice. :banghead:

BUT... lo and behold, 4wd low does work. :drivin: I get it rolling and get into a parking lot just a short distance from my house. Put everything back to normal & it works fine.

Drive 1/4 mile to shop & pick up the spare trailer tire they swapped for me, turned around to go home. After about 1/8 mile it pops out again. :banghead: Go through the same procedure but now it won't engage.

Was able to coast into my drive  where I continued to try to get it engaged... not happen'n.

Shut it off... now it won't turn over, like the park or neutral sensor isn't working.

I suspect it has more to do with the transfer case, what do you gear heads think?

87 waggy, 360 229... I think,... stock T case.

sounds like you lost the tranny or engine mount and it messed up all your linkages.

I second that. if you moved something so far out of line, it's not gonna know where it should be, now the t-case is bettween gears, the NSS thinks the trans is in gear, etc.

X3 on what the others have said. Start with the easy to diagnose things.

Check your tranny mount and your motor mounts. If you've never replaced them, chances are they need to be replaced. BJ's Offroad now has a "kit" containing the poly motor mounts and tranny mount.

The t-case jumping could be the flag shifter going into Neutral. When you put it in 4 low, you simply moved it and that's why it worked.

Hopefully the motor mounts/tranny mount is/are the issue. They're easy to deal with. And cheap, too. (In the grand scheme of things)

Might be your Tcase popped into neutral.

This sounds like something that happens to me all the time. T-case pops into neutral from the body flexing on it's old mounts and pushing the linkage, or so I've been told....:o Might be different than your issue because I have a NP208.

I turn the truck off, put the tranny in neutral. With the truck off I pull the 4wd lever up into 4lo then swiftly back down into 2wd, start the truck up and drive off.
If I don't shut it off it make whirring and grinding sounds while trying to shift the T-case into 2wd or 4wd.
Might work for you?

I'll try again when I get home.
