I might have a line on a '60s-something Gladiator dump truck in decent shape. I know nothing about it other than it's a factory dump bed and that it has an original 327 Vigilante engine. I saw it from about a hundred feet away, and it was covered in snow, but I think it looks something like this: http://www.angelfire.com/nb2/jeeppickups/dually4.jpg
Does anyone have any information on these factory dump models? Just curious about the production numbers, options, and maybe a few pictures. Not that I need a dump truck, but... :D

If it looks like that truck, it's a factory DRW (dual rear wheel) truck. Not a lot of them were made, and a desirable vehicle if you dig Jeeps. Not sure if Jeep would supply the dump body; usually buyers would buy a cab-and-chassis trucks and the dealership would install the aftermarket truck body of their choice. There are lots of companies that manufacture the truck bodies.

Thanks for the info, guys. :)
I talked to my friend, who knows a bit about the truck, and he thinks it only has single rear wheels. Haven't confirmed it myself. If/when I talk to the owner I'll have to find out about the manufacturer of the truck body.

That's strange... must be some form of anti-linking going on from Angelfire. The image is located at the following website, near the very end. There are a lot of cool pictures there, anyway. :)

Cut and paste the link into the top of your browser, as suggested, and it works fine.

Those are all on the dually registy, the guy on angel fire borrowed them and we've exchanged some info back and forth. I think he had some of the fire truck dually pics I borrowed from him. If anyone runs across some new rigs let me know and I'll add them to the registry.
BTW, 6 lug NDR's or Mitsu won't fit these rigs, at least not with the stock axles. Stockton could probably make the 19.5 for these 5/8 studs though.

I swear i have seen the Jeep's on the big 6 lug set up ?

5/8lug ? ! ?
so the rears are 8 lug like a GM Ford n Dodge.
and
the fronts are 5 lug like an M37 power wagon or M715/725 ?
I couldn't really see the lug pattern but a 19.5 wheel/tire combo would be ideal for them low gear truck's plus much safer then those split rims. . .

You have, but they weren't on a metric bolt pattern and the Gladiator 6 bolt is also 5/8 studs where the SAE equivalent of the import metric 6 lug is about 3/4"+. The fronts are also 6 lug on the Gladiator, if it is the OEM dually... the hubs were 5 lug but the dually adapter is 6 lug at the rim end.

So the import wheels only visually appear the same as the large 6 like but the stud holes are smaller ?
I had a 1962 Dodge D400 tow truck with 6 lug hub's and 17.5 wheel's that some body installed 16's on the rear n tossed the 17.5's on the bed, i figured on putting them 19.5's on it but after running it a couple months some shumck stole it :( . . . oh well least now i know the 19.5's wouldn't have fit cause it was large lugged like my Stude 6x6 pictured above . . .

why 19.5s? I dont see any advantages other than looks. Plus they will make a truck that rides like crap ride crappier. You dont need big rims to handle better (its a truck) and you dont need 16 in brakes on a truck the typical brakes work fine. In the winter/offroad the small sidewall wont flex so no grip. and there freakishly expensive and make the truck look ugly. 21st century rims on 20th century stuff just aint right. Just stick with some nice 16in dually rims with some 235/85-16s.

you truly are stupid sir or highly uneducated in truck and tire technology 19.5's have been around since the 50's . . . everything i do is off road and in the Muck i have never ever not once been stuck with 19.5's . . .
Example:
1. long tread wear less money.
I pay $140-$175 for 19.5's the last 60-80K miles.most i ever paid was $225.
16's cost me $200-$250 only last 25-35K miles. most i ever paid was $268.
2. the handle better then 235/8516's as there is 15% less side wall the ride & handling actually improves, i know i have compared the 2, the key is not set at 100PSI on a light truck run 55psi-75psi they handle just fine i had set under my 3/4 ton set 65psi rode and handled perfectly . . .
3. less maintenance they do not have to be rotated as often, and they last 3 times longer so you don't have to change them as much, and they almost never blow out.
4. i had a loaded truck with a set these fantastic 16's it blew set of duels truck was all over the road by the time i got it stop i was within 3 feet of hitting car with Kids in the back seat.
#4 is the most important reason i switched my 16 inch truck's over to 19.5's after 10-12 years i haven't had but 1 blow out and the truck handle it beautifully and set right down on the shoulder.
 Maybe it wouldn't have bothered you to kill a kid or 2
I see plenty of trucks running 16's staying around looking unsafe and highly dangerous i think to myself i'm glad i'm not the brain dead moron.
it's not about looking as much as its about being safe you notice on all factory DRW trucks these days rim's are getting larger and side walls shorter ?
You can as you please . . . I ain't killing anybody's Kid's mothers fathers sisters brothers ECT . . .
EDIT:
they offer plenty of traction tires:
these last about 75,000 miles & cost $150-$170:

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn232/HURSTSSAMX69/Tires/OliverSuperTraction2.jpg
I haven't ran these but i know a few that have last about 50,000miles cost $140:
http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn232/HURSTSSAMX69/Tires/225R195.jpg
these last 80-85,000 miles cost $175-225:
http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn232/HURSTSSAMX69/Tires/225-245R195.jpg
I haven't used yet but cost $145-$155 last 55-60,000miles:

He could be both... right? Stupid and uneducated in truck and tire technology. I mean... you'd have to be stupid to not be educated in truck and tire technology like you are I suppose.
Wait, I thought this thread was about dually J Trucks, one in particular... maybe I'm stupid too. ;)

Well, I sure didn't expect my little inquiry about dump trucks to become such a hot topic. :p
I should be seeing the owner of the dump truck next week, and I'll be able to find out if it's a DRW Jeep or not. I'll try to get some pictures...

Back on topic... the dumps were made by Daybrook if it's an original unit. There are dually production numbers on the Dually Registry in my sig... three clicks away. The only dumps beds I've seen in factory brochures were not the classic dump truck type beds as the one pictured here but had either dump flat beds or had a liner dump inside a std bed... and I've never seen one of those.

If you do get some pics, and it is a dually, please get one of the VIN tag in the door frame and ask the owner if he minds his pics being added to the Registry. I haven't found anyone who has minded but you never know.

FWIW I'm partial to the 16.5 " original style split ring wheels on my truck. They aren't the most high tech but the cool factor is pretty high. I searched high and low to find enough of them to have a complete set!
