Can I drive in low-gear 2WD with a QT and a part-time kit or will it bust something up? The reason I'm asking is because of the large tires and high gearing...and no money for gears!

Yes You can... If you want you're max speed to be 25mph... You can run in lorange anytime with a qtrac, because the reduction comes on the input side.. It's edrive you wanna be careful with..

I never get over 20mph from work to home, so sometimes I'll drive home in 4-Lo Full-time. smile.gif

Brad, performance Off-road in athens has got the best deal going on gears and installation, he'll meet or beat anybodys price. I was quoted $149 ea for ring and pinions package plus $75 per axle for install and maybe a master install kit for a nominal price also. performance Off road 706 548-9393 ask for alex and tell him you read about it on the southern jeeps web board.
As soon as I can gather the money I'm going for 5.13 gears and a mini spool in the rear(only cause I already have the mini not the full spool).

Curtis...thanks for the tip, I'll be giving him a call.

I'm not too sure on the terminology of all the axles peices, so I might be missing a big chunk, but I'm interpretting that as I could do a gear swap at about 500 for both axles...correct?

Thanks again!

Sad thing is my drive is mostly interstate, and I barely get above 20 as well :D Good ole Atlanta traffic!!!

What Ratio are you after?

I don't know really. With the 35 inch tires, all I know is it's way to low (or high, whatever). When I put it in low gear - it feels right (take-off power and acceleration). I'm not trying to create a torque monster, but I'd also like it to not be so obvious that the tire/gear thing is way off. I'll double check what gears I have tonight. The axles are stock Dana 44 WT axles from a 79. Thanks for all the help everyone...

You should be able to bolt 3.73 gears to your carriers without too much trouble setting up the r&p. That is what I am running on my 88 GW with 33s and the highway performance is pretty good as well as trail and rock. Any lower than that (3.92 or higher number) will require different carrier. In 77, most gears in Cherokee D44s were 3.07, 3.54 or 3.73. Ooops, just read you have 79 axels... It is possible you may even have as high as 2.73 gears. We have a 77 Wag with 3.07 gears and the 16% OD kit in a QT and that computes to something like 2.66:1. With 32" tires, that is way high... ;) Going back to stock QT soon.

FWIW: I would probably want at least 4.10 gears running 35" tires between highway and trail use.
