That big 360 just doesn't seem to be putting out the horses like it should. When I jump on the accelerator it just kind of mosies down the road. I have limited mechanical knowledge so I don't know were to start looking.

There is none. the 360 is not a neck snapping power house, of course it is lifting off 4500 lbs or so as well. I am not sure what it is you are meaning, it has less power than you had before, or you never had more power with it and feel there should be more.

Do you have the 2bbl or 4bbl carb
the 2 bbl makes the engine seem like a 6 maybe even a 4 cylinder at times

I am running a 4bbl. I haven't had the rig for to long, but it never seamed to have much power. I am not looking for a rocket but I would think you would feel some acceleration when I put my foot in it. It just slowly increases speed.

Give us more info such as how many miles on it etc. Start with making sure you have no vacuum leaks then get a compression test. See what the results are and go from there.

Where are you located? just curious. vac leaks, nasty carbs, and a whole slew of other things cadn cause a lack of power. That smog junk never helps matters much either ;) How many miles does the thing have?

Once you complete the engine checks mentioned above, look into doing the TFI (ignition) upgrade. My throttle response has greatly improved since I performed the TFI upgrade.

What gears and tire size do you have? This can make a night and day differance. My jeep gets up and goes for the most part.

I'm quite happy with the performance of my 2bbl.
I guess the 4.09 gears help, but I don't have any upgrades over stock (yet...).
As John and Kerry said, check for vacuum leaks - these held my rig back until I eliminated them. The other thing that I found made a big difference was getting the timing spot on. The timing mark on my balancer is in the wrong place for some reason, so I just used trial and error until it didn't ping on uphills.
How about a carb service? Maybe your power valve is shot.

My 360 in my 86 Grand Wagoneer with 2bbl and 136,000 miles on it gets up and goes pretty good. That's also with 3.31 gears. Heck, I can even spin the tires wth it.
Like said above look for vacuum leaks, this will effect performance like you wouldn't believe. What brand and model of Carb do have on there.

Well you guys got my head spinning with suggestions. As far as the carb goes, it says Carter AFB competition series. I can't tell if that is set up more like the Carter BBD or the Autolite 4350. I have tried adjusting the idle. When I bought the rig it ran really rich and did not idle well. I read through the section for the high altitude idle adjustment, but I will probably get help with that. I live in western Washington and am right at sea level, so I am not sure were to set the adjustment. The rig itself is running on 190k but the "guy I bought it from" said the motor was rebuilt about 50k ago.
I think my biggest culprit right now is that the carb needs a good cleaning.

It shouldnt be too sluggish going from a stop. They are torqers and can get going pretty good. Does sound like maybe a carb problem or timing is out.

Agreed, not head snapping, but it does have some gidy-up. Louise likes a little more spark advance then the average bear. She does slug down more in 4x4 then in 2. She does like a good complete tune up, about once a year. If your is slow but steady, sounds like it is tune up time.

With a 4v of just about any kind, when you put your foot in it, and it opens those secondaries up, you should atleast feel the seat pressing into you a bit. That AFB, iirc, has vacuume secondaries. A vacuume leak would probably cause the secondaries to not open up, and the rest of the carb would run like crap too. Start looking for vacuume leaks. Carb cleaner works really well for that. Oh, and get used to it. Vacuume leaks are a constant love/hate relationship with FSJs, more hate than love.
Hey Ernzo, noticed you've got your hood up in your avatar. So is mine. :D I think i like yours better.

THanks Brown Bear. Louise just finished lunch there in Ouray, she had Roasted Bronco with little red potatoes and a side of transmission failure.
