I am going to be taking a road trip from Boise Idaho (about 3000 ft) where I just purchaced a 78' cherokee with a 258, t-400, and 2 barrel carb to Breckenridge Colorado (about 8000 ft?) to ski for about a week. Then I will drive back to Kansas City Missouri (about sea level).
Could I get some info or tips from you guys on how or where I should adjust the timing and carb, or if I even need to? The carb is supposed to be brand new and the engine has about 92000 miles on it.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Bryan

I am not too familiar with the 2 barrel for the 258.... which carb. But the rule would be to advance timing to about 12 degrees or even 15 (what are your original specs), you can lean a tad the idle screws by half a turn to a turn, but do not forget to enrich back when returning to 3000, it will run fine if too lean, but hard to start when hot, and do not open the throttle untill back to specs.
Also make sure the choke mechanism does not over work wit the cold temperature if you have a non electrical choke. ( i have a 10 gauge wire that i loop in the carb throat to prevent this from happening)

As you gain Altitude The fuel ratio will get richer and that will carbon up the plugs. And that causes the engine to start missing bad at lower RPMs the link below covers that topic…

A very slight advance in timing can help but I don’t bother with it.
Are you with the KCS?? I’m x RR
Good Luck http://www.michiganjeepers.com/forums/images/graemlins/wave.gif and CUL ;) … ds..

Thanks for the replies Michel and Don S. It should be very helpful. And Don S I don't work for the KCS, but our railroad does have a joint yard with the them. I work as a dispatcher for the Iowa Chicago Eastern a regional RR that runs from Kansas City to Chicago. It will eventually connect with the DM&E RR to run to the Powder River Basin in Wyoming from Chicago.

Dispatchbdb:... Cool
… I was kind of a boomer in the ‘50s… I worked on the Super Chief From Dodge City to LaJuanta,
and the Panhandle & Santa Fe as a Brakeman. And was an Engineman on the Ft.Worth & Denver and yes we still ran steam.
... I also did a little ‘car-spotting’... opppps not drugs… on the RI. I made a video of the UP hump in FW that is a sometimes training film. But wow man I don’t SKI!…
Good luck and http://www.michiganjeepers.com/forums/images/graemlins/wave.gif and Hope you had some Happy Holidays … CUL.. ds..
Ps... You know how to tell when the RI is on the ground??
The ride gets smoother…
