View Full Version : Thinking about buying this jeep truck

So I've been thinking about buying a project, and the jeep trucks have been on my mind lately.
I found a 1972 truck online. The guy says it's J-20 model. 4wd. Has the original engine, transfer case and axels. And about 120,000 miles on it. I've sent an email asking about the shape of the axles, frame, body, 4wd condition, and for some pictures.
Is there anything in particular to look for with this year and model?
And I found this site: http://www.offroaders.com/tech/jeep/Jeep-J-series-pickups.htm
Does the info there seem like a good list to reference?
Thanks :)

The site seems like a good starting point for some basic info, but I'm sure the bulk of the information you'll need for your new J truck can be found in the tech archives and from members of this forum as a large number of the members have J trucks and are extremely knowledgable about J trucks. Hope this helps.

If it's a '72 not a J20, that model designation didn't start until 1974 IIRC.
Get the VIN# it'll tell you the GVW etc.

'72 would be a J4000 if it was the long bed HD truck.

Thanks everyone.
I might be passing on that one, as I haven't heard back from the owner. I'm looking at either a J-series or a wagoneer, if the price is right. This would be my first project vehicle. :)
I was actually referred to this site from jeepforum.com if any of you visit that forum. They said this would be a great place to learn more about these models.
I don't have any pics of the truck I was asking about, but I can give you a picture of my current Jeep. This one has too much sentimental value to go and beat up, so I only do light wheeling with it. That's why I'm wanting to pick up another than I can have some fun without worrying :)

Don't give up on him because he doesn't know that '72 and J20 don't match; he might not know a lot of other stuff about the truck that could be to your advantage.
Get all the info you can from this board and go hunting.
Good luck.

Well I heard back with more information. Interesting paint job I might add!
"The 4wd does work, the frame is solid, the axles are original, seals are good no leaks. It does have some rust but is not rusted out by no means."

Can you tell by the body what model it is? I did a quick search for the j-2000 and it looks similar.
Oh he is also asking $900 for it... thoughts?

If you can, grab it. $900 for a running not too rusty J truck is a good price. I paid 1K for my first one and lets say it was a more than a little rusty.:(

It's definetely a J-2000 (short wheelbase). Looks to be worth $900 from the pictures. Is it worth $900 to you?

Well it's "not" a J20. as mentioned J20's didn't arrive till 74 and the round tailights were dropped in 73 along with the single wall box and chain tailgates so it's at least a 72 or earlier.
The rust camo is unique. Make a good midwest salt belt rig. :)
edit: going by the box length I'd also guess J2000.

Don't get me wrong, I actually really like the camo paint job.
Now I definitely wouldn't mind a paint job like this one! I really like that red

It's worth $900 just for that wild paint job LOL. If it runs and drives thats a bonus. That truck looks like it's on fire must look wild rolling down the road. :)

Yeah I kind of wish I was quicker on it. Oh well, I've got a big craigslist search in my rss reader for any jeeps that come on the market in the midwest! :)

I haven't been on here lately but found this thread while on a lengthy phone call today. I know I've seen the xljeep around, perhaps in the parking lot at my office...??
Better luck with your next project candidate.

Haha, too funny :)
Welcome! I also saw this truck for sale, but this was was months ago. Apparently they had a hard time getting rid of it. When I saw it (if I remember correctly) it was located in illinois, and it had a 304. Isn't that right?
What part of MO are you from? Columbia here.

Hey, yeah it was some part of illinois. The guy said that it was all stock as far as the engine, trans, diffs, etc. So I'm not exactly sure which it had.
I'm in Chesterfield, lived in Columbia for 4 years :)

I'm a cj7, cj8 owner. A fellow member of jeepform.com recommended that I contact you. A friend of mine got a 64 j200 tow truck. He's more of a mopar/dart man who restores these cars. He did a job and got as partial payment the j200. He figured I would want it, but I'm just finishing a resto of the cj7 and starting the cj8. Can you give some info on this truck and what it would be worth. He has two many projects and I know him, it would just sit. I would rather see someone either restore or use to restore another project. The frame is rusted, but I don't see major rust. The floor pans have heavy rust. Body has few rust holes, doors have rust where door skins rap around bottom. I have pictures at http://s766.photobucket.com/albums/xx307/jammer-1/1964%20j200%20jeep/. The truck I believe only has 29,000 mi. Any info is appreciated since my experience is in cjs. Thanks.
Well good luck with finding a truck. I'll let you know if I spot anything.
