I underswtand that you cannot use a limited slip rear w/ a 229. Any other way to achieve the desired effect in the rear?

You can use a limited slip rear with NP229.MY '88 came with it from the factory as part of the towing package.

Mine is an 84, wondering if the set up is the same.

As far as I know the NP229 is the same for all years, but I'm from being an expert.I'm assuming your '84 has a D44 rear. You have many options as to what type you want to install depending on what you do with you Wag.

The 229's visc coupling only has to do with limitting the slip between the front and back differentials, you can run any LS or locker in the back axel same as any other case. the only thing that you have to be careful of is using a locker in the front axel because it's always connected, you would lose much of your steering on most any surface, especially hard surface, but that has to do with the fact that your front axel is always connected, the two front wheels to each other, and not the particualar transfer case. I think this misinformation got started because all full time transfer cases (stock, not modified) use a "always loocked hub" on the front axel.
