16 gauge is the best choice, its thick enough to not bend easily when installed, but thin enough to cut without too much difficulty. I learned the hard way when I tried some 18 gauge because it was easy to cut with tin snips, but it isn't very sturdy, so I switched to 16 gauge and it works great. Its harder to cut, but not too hard. How are you going to attach it? Cut the old rust out and butt-weld in the new piece?

Fiberglass covered with Herculiner! :D
16 if you got it, mine are just scabbed in there to keep my feet from falling through.

16 guage. I had that size put in my '91 Grand Wagoneer and it worked perfectly.
