Hello from Maine...I have an 87 GW with a 360 V8 that the alternator squeals every time I start her and I notice that my voltmeter in my dash is barely showing 6-7 volts. When I rev her up the squealing stops and my voltage now is reading @ 13.5 volts. i purchased her few months ago and I needed to replace few things on her (carb, radiator, etc..) so while I was waiting for some of the parts to come in, I decided to check the alternator according to the service manual. The only thing I couldn't check was the internal voltage regulator but everyting else checked out fine. I can remember when I first bought her that I had that squealing then but I thought it was my power steering belt and made some adjustments. Another odd thing also is when I first got her, she had a few light bulbs burnt out that I had to replace Hmmmmmmm. Any guidance on what I need to do will be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like the alternator belt is loose to me.

That there would be my first guess. could also be bearings, but most likely belt

I replaced all the belts when I first got her and I checked the belt tension couple of times already. Does it seem the alternator is being loaded down? Or the bearings are starting to go?
With new belts and proper tension and it still makes noise I'd guess the bushings or look close at the pulley. If it's cracked and widening the belts won't be riding in the correct groove and will squeal. Same deal if the pully is wobbling because it's worn at the shaft.

when i get an alternator squeel, i just retighten the belt about as tight as i can get it, if that doesnt change the volt reading, pull the alternator and take it to autozone. they will put it on a machine and test it
