I've been checking out a 77 Cherokee "to purchase" for quite awhile now & this morning I made a deal for it & drove it home!!!
Had been at home about an hour & 3 different guys stopped to check it out! About 45 minutes after the last guy left, the first guy comes back & makes me an offer I couldn't refuse, so he handed me a fist full of money & drove it away!
I blew it, this was a once in a lifetime deal & I got greedy & sold it for a substancial profit!!!
I've only seen one other Cherokee like this one & that was 20 years ago!
Here's what I gave up...
1977 Jeep Cherokee 2 dr.
401 engine with dual exhaust, no catalytic converters w/Federal exemption sticker.
4 spd trans w/ granny low. 4th gear seemed to be an overdrive gear.
2 speed t-case (?) w/very low geared low range.
Dana 44 front w/disc brakes & 4.10 R&P w/limited slip & Warn hubs.
Corp. Model 20 rear w/HD 12 1/2" drum brakes 4.10 R&P w/limited slip & solid flange axles.
Power steering, power brakes, AC, power windows, leather seats, full instrument cluster, simulated wood grain 3 spoke steering wheel, tilt wheel, roof rack, 15" X 8" factory spoke wheels w/11-15 Armstrong Tru-Tracs, a Warn 8274 winch w/Warn winch front bumper.
An Arrow 36 gallon gas tank.
3 skid plates (engine, trans & t-case, fuel tank)
This Cherokee only has 32,000 actual original miles on it & has lived its entire life inside a spacious garage. It was driven from Ventura to Big Bear Lake once a year!
It is white w/goldish tan interior, gold wheels, no other stickers or emblems. All rubber seals are like new & I swear there is still a hint of the new car smell!!!
The gentleman that ordered & owned it all these years, worked for AMC/JEEP & it was special made for him in 77. All of the paperwork & such matched everything I was told.
I've been keeping an eye on this Cherokee for a number of years & heard about a month ago that he had passed away!
I paid very little for it & the guy that bought it from me, offered $25,000 for it!!! He's known about it for quite awhile too & I beat him to it by about 20 minutes this morning!!!
So I'm back on the hunt again, I think I need to go check on a 1969 Wagoneer I know about that is hiding in the corner of a shop all covered up!!!

Actually, the 69 I've had my eye on for awhile, has a $10,000 price tag on it! It is in incredible original condition too with only about 50,000 original miles on it! There were some upgrades done to it back in the mid-70s by Four Wheeler magazine. It has a 455 Buick in it that replaced the original 350, but he still has it on an engine stand in the shop! They put in an under the dash AC unit too! I believe it has full floating hubs/axles on the modified rear end & 4 wheel disc brakes with Warn locking hubs front & rear!
It is bright red with tan interior & the original factory paint still shines like a shooting star!
I'd be willing to pay the full asking price, but I've got to see if I can get it for less!
One thing about California, regardless of what you are looking for, there's probably one hiding in a garage or shop somewhere!

His daughter said they own ranch type property around California & several Western States & all of the vehicles they own & operate "off-road" at those properties, are exempted from having a catalytic converter, due to the possibility of one starting a wildfire!
Of course that doesn't apply to her new Corvette!
The odds are that the guy that bought it from me, unless he can prove otherwise, will have to install cats!

Welcome!!!
Probably the smog exempt, it is because the previous owner is living outside a smog request area. Depend where you are living. If in or out a smog request area. If yes, when the tags expired you need to take it trough DEQ... And good luck with that!!!

They must be expensive out in Ventura area. A profit is a profit.
I would rather have a '77 CHerokee CHief over a 1969 Super Wagoneer. Then again, I was born in 1977.

The quest for beans, butter and baby shoes can also come into play here--and be key in such decisions. Money--particularly these days--is important.
I've had this happen meself.
Please change the color of your font, BTW; my tired old eyes have a tough time with what I'm seeing for copy from you.

IIRC a few years ago this was the guy who had a sedan delivery panel wagon, drove it to Vegas in 1992 and won a 1992 401 powered GW

The only issues with that is this is: there were no 1992 Grand Wagoneers built and 401's went away after 1978.

That's the point. I (and others) think the O.P. is full of crap.

Yeah, I wonder why a rig with 32k would need a rear axle replacement?

But other than that what is the problem with the story?
Like jaber and dan state unless you have pics, I'm not biting.

Sorry, no photos, I am not a photo guy, never have been, don't even own a camera, matter of a fact, I've never owned a camera.
I didn't even own it long enough to probably take photos anyway.
To the best of my knowledge, rearend was not replaced nor worked on.
I've owned more than my share of vehicles, but never had a sedan panel delivery wagon.
Sorry if you don't or cannot believe, but this is not the first odd Jeep or vehicle I've found & it probably won't be the last.
For those that don't believe, good, that way those really great deals that are too good to be true won't be bought by you & I'll come along & buy it.
See ya on the trail!!!
I believe you, Bob. My pet leprechaun said everything you write is true!
