View Full Version : Oh no, a case of the fickle fuel gauge

Hey Guys/Gals,

Looking to tap someone's experience and knowledge.

I noticed one day last week the fuel gauge hadn't moved off "E" while waiting for the engine to warm up. I was starting to panic that I had run myself out of gas. But, while driving to the gas pump, the indicator suddenly moved up to about 3/8 full. I was relieved I wouldn't be sitting on the side of the road and figured she was just being cranky.

This week, I fill up when almost to "E" and the gauge only went up to just over "1/2". That was 3 days ago and it still hasn't moved up to indicate the amount of gas in the tank. I only drive 16 miles aday to/from work and I'm clocking the miles. The gauge should be down to about the 3/4 mark.

Any ideas why the gauge won't go to "Full" but appears to work for "1/2" and lower? And more importantly, how to fix it?

I'm waiting for the tank to get lower to verify it still starts working at half full.

Thanks

Tito

Check both of the grounds, the one at the fuel tank and the one on the dash. If they are good, then you might need to replace the gauge itself or the fuel sending unit in the tank. Hope this helps.
