brand new to forum. just inherited 67 wagoneer with AMC327, T18, Dana 27/44 4.09. Weak engine but running. Any advise on best way to revive. It looks like rebuild of existing is expensive. Want Chevy small block. Any help on what I am getting into, best way price and modification. Don't necessarily need monster, but want dependable off-road. Any help or reply appreciated. Thanks, Wayne67
Welcome Wayne! Where are you in MO? Lots of info here on chevy swaps; best way to find it is the search option at the top right of the page, or ask specific questions and someone will know the answer. I'm about to start a 6.5 diesel swap into an 85 Wag, it uses the same motor mount as a small block Chevy. You can go to Advance Adapters or make your own motor mounts. Oh yeah, we like pictures, if you have any, let's see'em.

With a T18 the easiest swaps will be AMC V8's and Ford V8's. Simple bellhousing swap will fix you up. Simplest would be a 360 AMC, you could probably use factory motor mounts and a factory bellhousing. Not saying SBC is impossible, just more complicated. You'd have to either mate the Chebby to your T18 (which I would keep for its strenght and low first gear) via an adapter or use another driveline setup.

Welcome Wayne67!
Where in Missouri are you located?
I get to Wentzville often, which is about 30 miles west of St Louis.
We have several members from MO.
I agree with Brule_Cherokee, that an AMC would the easiest swap.
Because Ford used a similar T18 in their trucks,
a Ford engine and tranny swap would be next.
If you had automatic transmission, a Chevy would be an easier swap, for Jeep used a GM TH400 in their rigs until 1979.
The Jeep version (except the earliest one) had a AMC Bellhousing Bolt Patterned Case, but the 'guts' were all GM parts.
So, folks swap out the Jeep patterned unit for a Chevy patterned unit.
There is more to it, but you have a T18, so no need for the details
Novak has some good information about adapting T18 to a GM Engine

if ya wanted to do an automatic driveline I would traid you one for the standard --or when you swiych to the chevy I would buy some (alot)of your old parts (if the price is right )

Did some one swap in the T18? They came with a T85 three speed. If you do plan on doing the swap over to AMC you will need to swap out the motor mounts. You will have to do this with a 350 also. But the jeep is pretty much setup for the 360 just put in new mounts for a donar rig in the correct place, move the cross memember and you are there.
Oh yea, WELCOME!!!!!

he would need a new bellhousing to an AMC to the t-18 cause the 327 is totally diff

True. I did this swap awhile ago. I went from a 327/T85/D20 to a 360/TH400/QT. I am just wondering if the T18 was swapped in because it was not an option in 67.

Porkchop- do you still have the bellhousing /flywheel and clutch components (including the peddle )I am runnin the 400 right now but at some point in tine I think I want to change to a T-18A actually if you have the whole getup still I might want to buy it from you maybe even the motor- the whole setup is because the 20 is a diff set of gears from auto to standard .I also have a compleat QT 400 that I have no use for (no X-fer) if interester in a traid of some sort

Sorry, I don't have it anymore. I did the swap over two years ago. I gave all the stuff to midnight wagon (except the engine which spun a bearing). If you get a hold of him he may be able to help you out.

Guys, thanks for the help and welcome. Pork Chop is correct, I was going off bad info. It is a T85 3 speed on column. Wilks, I am in SW MO by Branson. Does SBC 350 just need new bell housing and new mounts to swap with keeping existing from tranny back. thanks.

Depending on what you want to do with the Wagon, you can probably find a good running Jeep 327 for near nothing except your labor to pick it up. IMO There's nothing wrong with the 327 except it's old, heavy and parts are hard to find. It's not a bad engine, just an orphan.
