View Full Version : Changing the timing chain - intake and carb GRRR!!

Ok - so after I drove the Jeep over to my tech school to begin the labor of an intake manifold, carb, gaskets, steering stabilizer and a tune up... I was in the lot about 5 minutes before class and I gave it a few revs - nothing too high or too hard - but enough to kick out some blue smoke (he he he) well it just suddenly died - and wouldn't start again! We check the timing by putting the crank to TDC - and check the distrib. rotor - it was 180 degrees off... now - are these motors interferance motors??!! If so I'm "screwed" and prolly bent all 8 valves... If not, and I don't think it is - I may have just jumped the timing chain. Or even just knocked the cams outta allignment with the Distributor - ya know what i mean? Any opinions? It had a slow crank and no go. So far I have off all the accessories - the brackets, the wter pump, the distributor, and the fan. About to pull the Crank pully off. How do I get off the cover that the distrib and the water pump affix to?? Thanks - Jeeps are fun... to drive.

Turn the engine around 180 deg. again, and I'll bet it's right on ;) 2 rotations of the bottom end = 1 rotation of the camshaft, thus why it *looked* 180 deg. off. the fact that is stalled and died is probably just some other "wagoneer" related issue. ignition, fuel, what ever... Either way, there really is no way the car would have jumped 180 degrees. maybe a tooth or 2, but all the way around? the more I think about that the more I think there is no way it could happen.

well it's a little late now to try and re-start it - but I will turn the crank and see where it lands... if it re-alligns itself - should I just assume it's OK and go on with the rest of the chour?

How many miles on the chain do you know?
if unknown and is sloppy swap it out.

the body has about 200,000 - the motor has about 28,000 as it was a poorly rebuilt Jasper Drop in. Just sure as to the chain - would hope it was new....

Why do you feel it was poorly rebuilt? I have had only good experience with Jasper. Start over with the basics. Spark, Fuel, Compression.

It all started with a poorly attached water pump which failed due to loose bolts... and other random loose bolts were then located at the time of that replacement which voided the warrenty cause the block overheated and the tab fell off... I know Jasper makes good things, but the guy/garage who installed this particular one did a sad job...

Well i got it all off today - timing looked to be on, but I ordered a new chain and gear set anyways - $60 after gaskets too. Better to do it now then later right. I think I musta caused the lifters to float - thus no start. Oh well - It better start when everthing is all said and done. Atleast the 360 didn't ask me to remove the **** oil pan to get things off. Anyone got torque specs on hand for things? I don't know where my Service manual got to... But I have access to AllData at school - so anything in advance is less I'll hafta look up. Is it better to put the timing and water pump back together before I tear into the manifold?

ok well - the new timing chain kit came today - the idiots had the Parts all wrong... so those had to go back. Gaskets, Chain and gears were all for some other vehicle. Looks like this job is going to be adding a few more days on real fast... :/

well either you all gave up reading this - or you wanted some pics - so here are a few before I bolted on the cam gears - timing cover assembly removed.

Hmmm... where do the bolts go? lol I think I am either missing a few - or I gained a few... ****it. This is slowing me down now. Wish I had space to do all this at home - woulda been done by now. Arg. Anyone know the bolt specs

These bolts?

I ended up having to pull the oilpan anyway, that little trick with the partial gaskets on the bottom corners of the timing cover didn't work.

Looking at the pics.... it looks as if you have some wear on the cam gear that drives the dizzy...
check both the dizzy gear and cam gear for wear... IE thin teeth....

too late now to check lol - i'm not pulling what we have back on - and yes - those bolts Green Giant got any details on how long each one should be to each hole? lol
