1965 Wagoneer getting the AC fixed (PO stored Wag for 2 years). Did the hoses, dryer, clutch and want to know which freon to go with. I know the cost savings and I know the R12 is colder. What I want to know is why I should stick with R12 or what exactly needs to be changed to do R134?

Thanks!

Joel

Well, I don't know what system your '65 is using. I can say that the stock system in my '88 GW, with an R-134a conversion installed this past Wednesday, was freezing our knees off on a trip this weekend.

A couple things:

* As I've heard before, the correct pressure for the R-134a systems is about 80% of the specified pressure for the same system running R-12

* I was concerned about the incompatibility of the oils, and the need to change over to new hoses and O-rings. My A/C guy, who is revered in this area as both fair and competent, said that they've got a synthetic oil blend that makes a complete disassembly no problem.

I was pleased that my truck's system held the 29" of vacuum for the twenty minutes the machine drew on it. The system was still sealed, so I didn't have to change any parts; lucky for me, as most of those fittings are going to break if I ever try to remove them!

Here's my logic for why I used R134:
Since I'm forever taking things on and off, and replacing and re-replacing, I figured I could count on getting R134 in the future but didn't know about R12. I was living in Cali at the time which made the decision that much easier. R134 it was.

Here's a thread that I replied to that talks about what I did. Other Thread (http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/Forum2/HTML/004161.html)

There's also pretty much the same info in the tech section (I recently found that!).

If you already bought the drier, you might have just commited yourself to R12 because the R134 needs a different one. A note about the hose I blew: it was because I routed it poorly. I redid them all and wrapped them with a rubber-hose-cover at sharp points.
